Not paid in 4 months and Company to be wound up...

Hi,
I'm looking for a little advice.

A family member is about to be made redundent as the company they work for is due to go under. The company is small with around 10 employees plus directors. They are a regular employee of the company, with a standard employee contract.

The problem is that they have not been paid for the last four months - where as other regular employess have continued to be paid their wages. I'm not sure exactly why they haven't been paid - but I suspect it is due to being a friend of the directors and financial controller for the company.

The company has been struggling and will be wound up in the coming days - the questions is what can they do to try and re-claim their unpaid wages?

I assume the first option is to approach the director/friend and ask for the unpaid wages? Also I've suggested they seek legal advice on their position. I'm not sure where they would stand once the company is wound up - unless there are assets which can be sold to provide some cash which may go the way of employees?

Has anyone any experience of this situation and how to best deal with it? Any advice would be gratefully received!
