Trouble is the railways have got too complicated, remember the days when you could just go to the station and get a cheap day return? and if you wanted to get off a stop early there was no penalty simply because you had in fact paid to go further than you did!0

Yep - I remember those days. Fares were mostly rather expensive ISTRC and cheap day returns often not available over 25 miles, 50 at most
But you can still get off a stop early - just buy a flexible ticket0 -

Cheap Day Returns are still available at the station and if you buy one you can get off a stop early.0 -

Is this a day return?
An off-peak day return is a fairly reasonable £17.50, and can be purchased on the day of travel, no pre-booking required.0 -
Can be done for £7.50 each way by committing to specified trains - and booking rather further ahead than you are. I don't think you will beat £17.50.
You could reduce the price if you are eligible for a railcard - but it would not be worth it for this journey alone0 -

I have to travel from London to Inverness on the 5th of August. I have a young person's rail card. Have tried splitting the fares but not seeming to get it cheaper than the direst £65 fare.0
