Are people actually reading this thread, or seeing the title and wading in with their slap dash comments?!

It was a croc-skin bag, not fur. I didn't, and won't, buy it. I am asking your OPINION on buying animal skins second hand. Nothing else.

I personally think you should have bought it when you saw it, I don't see a problem with the whole skins thing, and the fact that it is vintage makes a slight difference in that it doesn't support today's animal skins and fur trade.
I really don't see what the big deal is, and why people would make pathetic threats of criminal damage (donnac's post). If you don't agree with fur or skins, don't buy or wear it. But stop forcing your opinion on everyone else. They don't have to agree with you.

I'm glad you didn't buy the bag, GrammarGirl. I'm a big repile fan and have owned a pet tortoise for over 33 years!

Vintage or contemporary, it doesn't really matter. You're just perpetuating the myth that skin/fur is glamorous.

In my humble opinion there's so many gorgeous animal-friendly vintage bags and purses out there why own something that involved cruelty, no matter how many years ago?

I too have pet tortoises and love them, but it doesn't make me cruel to wonder what the hoo-hah is about the use of animal skins or fur if it isn't done in a cruel way. Thats surely the same as saying you should never eat meat as it is cruel? Its going to be produced anyway, and whether you buy or don't buy one bag is not really going to make a difference to the industry. It will still be there.

If it isn't done in a cruel way and the animal doesn't suffer that's a different matter, but i think most of the time the animals suffer a horrific death and people who buy the products are only going to incourage more animals to be skinned for their fur or skin (not sure what they do to snakes to make a bag, and probably don't want to!)

I didn't really have much of an opinion on this until i saw a tv programme about dogs being skinned alive for the fur, the image has stayed with me to this day and it horrified me. Was the most barabaric thing i have ever seen.

This is my opinion and i wouldn't force it on to somebody else, but i would say to people who think its accepted to wear fur or have snakeskin handbags should watch what happens to the animals, i am pretty sure it would put you off! I personally could not carry a dead animal around with me for the sake of looking good/fashion!

I don't like the look of fur or skin or even particularly leather though I did own a suede bag and do own one pair of leather shoes that I rarely wear. As I am vegan I 'shouldn't' wear leather but as I have been vegetarian my whole life (saved a few animals he he he) and it is only one pair of shoes that are too far gone to hand on to anyone else, but comfy for the occasional wear it would be wasteful of me to throw them out. I wouldn't buy a new leather item though.

I think personally I don't have a problem with second hand or vintage as it is a piece of history if you like it and will get use from it, then IMO it is better than it being wasted as the animal is already long dead.

I have major issues with the fur industry, just as i have issues with factory farming, I choose not to buy into this, however this is a personal choice. Just writing this though i was thinking, I would be slightly disgusted (maybe not quite the right word..) if I saw a person in a big fur coat, but watching people eat meat doesn't bother me maybe I'm a hypocrite too! :D

Oooh just realised I am a full blown hypocrite as I buy clarks shoes for DD which are 100% genuine leather! :D Ah well sorry cows but healthy feet for my toddler are higher on my agenda than your skins at the minute!

Though could technically argue that DH buy's them as I am a SAHM, and he brings home the bread!
