EDF Substandard Service

I live in a new-build property (Housing Association). Since moving in four & a half years ago I have not received a gas bill. Five weeks ago a man came to read my gas meter and told me I owed EDF £1,700. I gave him a cheque for £200 there and then. He told me that I would be contacted to set up a direct debit of £110 per month. He said someone would contact me within a week. No one did. So I wrote (twice) to their head office as that was the only address I had given me. Still no reply. in my letter to the head office I stated that if I didn't hear from them within seven days I would asume they were happy to supply my gas at no charge. Today, six weeks after the meter readers visit they phoned to try and set up the direct debit. They were unaware of the letters I had sent. I told them that I expect them to write off the outstanding balance and start again. i also said I'd be happy to see them in Court! It seems they'd been sending the bills to my housing association, who'd not been passing them on to me. How do I stand legally?

As you appear to have not made any effort to contact suppliers (or find out who they were) when you moved in then chances are you are liable for the whole bill.

There not just going to write off a £1700 bill. You have used the gas you are going to need to pay for it, you may want to speak to them to arrange a suitable payment plan.

I doubt the billing code will cover you as they have been sending bill just in the wrong name.
