Caller display is free as part of BT privacy. If your being charged for it (£2.50 a month is normal charge but can be higher) and your calls are with BT then you can get caller display free and need to call and swap from the charged option to the BT privacy free caller display.
You may have the really old value plan caller display which is about £16.00 a Quarter with a call allowance included of £1.50 i think????(prices have changed with the vat change so not sure of exact charge/credit)
You will lose the call allowance but gain free caller display.

When I was with BT privacy I had to make 2 chargeable calls a month or 6 a quarter dependent on billing period to get C.D. free. BT (website) says make some calls with BT BUT also says they reserve the right to charge you if you don't make the required chargeable calls!!!

You will no longer pay for Caller Display after subscribing to BT Privacy at Home, if you continue to make some calls with BT.
If you are renting Caller Display as part of the BT Calling Features packs, any change to your rental charges will be adjusted automatically. You may, of course, want to replace Caller Display with another feature from the range of services available. You can do this when you sign up for BT Privacy at Home online.

    * BT Privacy helps stop unwanted sales calls by registering you with the Telephone Preference Service and giving you BT Caller Display at no extra charge. From 1st October 2006, customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display. Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost if the following calls are made. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge £2.50 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £7.50 a quarter. If you do not currently make calls with BT and would like to start making your calls with us again, please call 0800 121 8088. Alternatively, if you'd like to make one-off calls that are chargeable to your BT bill then simply dial the numbers 1280 before you dial the phone number you wish to call.
** BT residential customers making some calls on the BT network can opt in to receive Caller Display for free, subject to availability. Analogue lines only. Caller Display equipment required. Numbers will not be registered if the call is from payphones; some switchboards; non-BT networks; or where a caller's number is withheld. Allow 28 days for activation of Telephone Preference Service. Terms and conditions apply.

You dont have to make 2 chargeable calls a month to qualify for BT Privacy (Inclusive Caller Display). 2 inclusive calls out of your call bundle will count.

Recent thread here where BT rep confirms this.

Caller display is not free with BT. The people who tell you this won't pay for the charges should you fail to meet the requirements so BT don't levy the standard charge.

Those same people will continue to say it's "free" however.

    It's not free.
