Need soup recipes with use dried soup mix (pulses) please

Hi guys does any one have any recipes for soup, or for anything I could use the bags of dried mixed soup pulses for , I just bought a wack off of approved food 4 bags for a pound , bargain hoping to make some very cheap and cheerful recipes and save some pennies. Any ideas would be great. I love this thread you guys have some great ideas, thanks.:rotfl:

    Hi fairyface,

    I use soup mix to make chicken and vegetable broth:

    -Strip all the leftover meat from a chicken carcass and put it aside.
    -Put the bones into a roasting tin and brown in a hot oven or under the grill (this really adds to the flavour)
    -Put the browned bones in a pan and cover with water, bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for at least four hours.
    -Strain the stock then add a couple of handfuls of soup mix.
    -Sometimes I add a couple of stock cubes for extra flavour at this stage.
    -Simmer until the pulses are soft then add black pepper, chopped carrots, leeks, celery and parsley.
    Once all the veg are cooked add in the reserved chicken, check for seasoning and serve with warm crusty bread. Pics of how I make it here

    I find boiling a piece of ham/gammon (makes a few meals & sandwiches) and then using the stock for a ham & lentil soup very tasty. I boil my gammon with onion and carrot, peppercorns and bayleaf then remove the cooked ham to cool/slice. Leave the veg in plus add some more including potato if you like. Then add soaked pulses. Boil it up then simmer. I just mash this down with potato masher but you could liquidise. If I have any scraps from carving ham I add these too. It's a lovely, filling soup. To make a cheap main meal you could add dumplings.

    Hello there - I made my first foray into the soup mix world about a week ago. The important thing is to make sure that you soak it first (if it's the dried pulses sort of soup mix) - at least overnight, in lots of cold water. Then add it to whatever soup you're making. I've started to experiment - usually I start with the meat (if I am using bacon or chicken or something), then add an onion, gently fry them both, then start chucking in all sorts of other stuff - herbs, tomato puree, other vegetables, maybe some worcester sauce or soy sauce for extra seasoning. Often I will add some stock cubes too, to enhance the flavours... Good luck!

    Like Maman I buy uncooked ham, boil it and slice it up for sandwiches and salads. I use the water its boiled in as a base for soups. Really easy one is to add some lightly fried onion, carrot and dired pulses and boil for as long as your dired pulses need. I also throw any little bits of ham that are too small for slices or any other left over meats.
    I also do this with hicken - I buy a whole chicken and roast it, then cut is into portions and use the bones and carcass to make stock - really easy jsut need to boil it all up for 2 hours or more. Drain it and add lightly cooked veg and pulses and boil again until the pulses are soft - then throw in some chicken bits. I hate wasting food so I keep back the fat from the chicken aswell - it keeps in the fridge if cooled and kept in a sealed jar and makes great roast potatoes!

    Buy yourself a Tesco Turkey leg for £1:47 and add you soup mix and veg. Turkey is a good healthy meat with great flavour.

    Here's a good recipe I've used:

    - simmer the turkey leg, crushed black pepper + salt in cold water for 1 hr.
    - add the peas (preferably dried marrowfat which were steeped overnight) and barley, or your soup mix.
    - remove turkey leg when peas/barley (soup mix) is near ready
    - add sliced table celery
    - add fresh carrots
    - add leeks
    - add in meat from the carcuss and parsley.
