Eon stay warm tariff?

we are just starting our second year of Eon stay warm tariff last year we paid £88 a month and the new year we have a fixed price of £93 a month i'm never really sure if this is a good price as it seems a lot to pay in the summer when your not using much gas or electricity for lighting but on the other hand it stopped us from worrying about having a massive quarterly bill in the colder months.
I should add this tariff works by means of letting you generally use as much fuel as you like and you still pay the same monthly fee, after they have looked at your usage after the first year they decide if your a low, medium or high user and this determines if your next year will be at a higher monthly cost.
The truth is i have no idea what the average spend for fuel use is for a house in the uk, we have gas and electricity.Saying that bills seemed to increase by a massive percentage over the last 2 years and didnt drop much when oil prices lowered.
Could anyone tell me if what im paying is quite reasonable.
kind regards

You are paying less than the national average. As you have 'unlimited' usage then that seems a decent price. There are others who are paying £130 to £150 on Stay Warm.

But whether or not you are getting a reasonable deal can only be answered if you have your annual consumption. Track down those figures and throw them in the calculator on a comparison site to see how much you would pay on a regular tariff.

I believe they say the average fuel costs are £1200 a year.
My fuel bill for the previous year was slightly higher at £1295 and would have been £105 a month on direct debit.

It is very difficult to say what is average as it depends on house size, detached, terrace, number of bedrooms and your own personal attitude to controlling the amount of gas and electric you use.

The Stay Warm tariff does give the reassurance that all your gas and electric is covered for the full year with no surprise increases.

I was just thinking about starting a thread on staywarm myself!!

My Nan is with them and pays around $95.00 per month. This to me is very expensive, i live in a similar sized house and my gas and electric is never $95.00 per month, even in winter. Though their are pro's to this plan as she can have her heating on anytime and not worry about the cost, where as i am very aware of how often i put my heating on.

I think i might help her look at her meter readings and see if she can get a cheaper deal. I know she resents paying so much in summer, but at least she knows how much she will be paying each month and that there will be no nasty surprises.

Only problem with your reasoning is that the average consumption you are comparing the OPs cost to would include the domestic fuel costs of Buckingham Palace and other similarly huge dwellings. The OP could be living in a one-bedroom flat for all you know. If they are then £93/mth would be IMO a high price to pay (again, hard to really say because we don't know the usage patterns etc).

The only trouble with your reasoning is that 90% of people use the same amount of heating whether they live in a three storey townhouse or a one-bedroom flat. Most households use one sitting room, one kitchen and one bathroom. Number of bedrooms and anterooms is irrelevant.

    On average.

But I don't disagree that a couple in a one-bedroom flat could and should easily use way less than £93 per month.

Well, all's well that ends well, eh?

PS I think you are forgetting about households with kids in them, BTW. Pesky boogers like to use their bedrooms whilst their parents may well be using the one sitting room, one kitchen and one bedroom. Kids' bedrooms these days are stuffed to the gills with leccy guzzling devices.

    Hi wilson1973,

Staywarm is a convenient tariff for many, and being able to use more energy in the winter time and not having to worry about a large bill can be reassuring to many.

It’s important to not get carried away with the ‘unlimited’ usage if you intend to stay on this tariff for more than one year though, as the previous years consumption is taken into account when the renewal is due. This is a reason many people might see a high increase the following year.

As your renewal only increased by £5 a month it looks like you have maintained a steady level of usage.

The way to be sure if this tariff is best is to look at a year’s consumption and use an independent comparison site. If you require the consumption figures for the last year, get in touch with us and we can provide this info.
