  • I think the hotdog thing was to show how to use those if you have them in. I dont think the idea was to go out and buy them just to make the meal.

Blimey, I can't believe there are so many pages on here since last week's episode.

Have to say that I watched it with a bit of scepticism as I thought it would be a load of fancy food I wouldn't eat anyway. But it was more down to earth than I expected. I'd not seen either chef before but I did like Allegra, and I liked how they aimed it at normal-ish people rather than people buying from Harrods and Fortnums - although perhaps that's the case tonight. £17k for food in a year? I just calculated my pittance and it will be just over £2k if I stick to budget. If I spend much more than my budget, I end up chucking a load out, so I'd bet that's also where a lot of theirs goes. We'll find out tonight.

We do need to remember that us on here have been striving for the OS and HM way for years, but there are still thousands of people out there that think it's ok to live on readymeals. No, we wouldn't have been able to spit food out at the table - we weren't even allowed to talk at the table or put our elbows on the table, so I think we've come a long way since then. Also, had I refused to eat, I wouldn't have got pudding. And when my mom was a girl, she got the same meal every day until it went mouldy and her grandad took pity on her and snuck it in the bin. Thank God we're not like that now.

But spitting at the table? No. Eating on the floor? No. Indulging fussy eating? No.

It was good that they saved the equivalent of her wage when she's losing her job. I like when they demonstrate something that way.

I did tape it, just in case I liked it, and I liked it so much I protected it on the DVD hard drive too. I'm going to record tonight's too, but I see it's not on next week due to the athletics.

Exactly! Although I follow the OS way I still found the programme interesting and we need to remember that it's aimed at people with no OS sense at all, not those of us who follow these rules as second nature :)

    8!

Good job you said that - I was getting all ready to be settled down for 9 :rotfl:

I do suspect that the 17k includes a lot of eating out though because even eating all fillet steak and oysters (_pale_) at every meal couldn't add up to that amount?! Surely?!

IMO there's a large difference between her giving her son the ready meals 3 times a week (full of additives preservatives, salt, fat and probably sugar) as well as a kebab with no veg compared to a few pieces of hot dog in a portion of a home cooked meal made prob once a fortnight .

To be fair the Asda macaroni cheese does not contain additives, preservatives or sugar (not all ready meals do) while processed meat products are apparently particularly unhealthy.
Hotdogs do contain preservatives, are high in salt and fat and can contain such delights as mechanically recovered meat, beef and pork connective tissue as well as various e-numbers. Yum! Personally I would not buy either though. :)

    ASDA Smartprice Macaroni cheese:
    Ingredients
Cheese Sauce (74%) [Water, Skimmed Milk, Whipping Cream (8.4%) (Milk), Cheddar Cheese (5.2%) (Milk) , Coloured Cheddar Cheese (5.2%) (Milk) [contains Colour (Annatto)], Single Cream (Milk), Skimmed Milk Powder, Cornflour , Wheat Flour, Salt, Ground Mustard, Ground White Pepper] , Macaroni Pasta (23%) [Water, Durum Wheat Semolina, Egg] , Cheddar Cheese (2.7%) (Milk) .

    Fat 7.8g per 100g
    Sodium 0.15g "
    equivalent as salt 0.4g

    ASDA Macaroni cheese
    Ingredients:
Water , Pasta (27%) [Water, Durum Wheat Semolina] , Mature Cheese Blend (16%) [Cheddar Cheese (55%), Medium Fat Soft Cheese] , Milk , Grated Mild Cheddar (2.5%) , Breadcrumb (2.0%) [Rusk [Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Salt], Vegetable Oil] , Maize Starch , Wheat Flour , Mustard [Water, Mustard, Vinegar, Salt, Spices] , Salt , Ground Nutmeg , Ground White Pepper.

    Fat 5.9g per 100g
    Sodium 0.25g ""
    equivalent as salt 0.6g

RDA of salt for children aged 7 to 10 years = 5g salt a day (2g sodium)

I use hot dogs now n then as they are a cheap way that I can get a bit of meat in my home cooked soups and pastas and other meals without having to buy expensive meat (which can only be bought locally in large prepacks) and throw a lot away or having to eat the meat several nights running. My flatmate being vegetarian it is an easy way to adapt should I feel like it and something done only every coupla months or so.
I agree with what you are saying - and like the occasional hotdog myself :D - but by the same measure, there is nothing wrong with a ready meal occasionally. Isn't the point that they were supposed to be offering alternatives to the processed foods that they had said were no good? I have no axe to grind, I don't think anything is much of a problem in moderation but the idea of moderation was part of the family's problem. I'm looking forward to it tonight as I love it when people begin to realise what can be done.

I've just had a big roast dinner with all the trimmings followed by HM cheesecake. I'm definitely not going to be tempted to snack after watching it tonight. :)
