What's this about?[/title]
A handy Argos website update means it now allows users to search its clearance deals store-by-store. These bargains can be seriously cheap, but in the past the problem's always been finding things actually available in your neck of the woods. This is about how it works, and how to cut the cost even further.

How does it work?
[/title]
The new search page is pretty straightforward: just tap in your postcode or town and choose your local store for a list of clearance items in that branch. Sort by price high-low or promotions to find some of the heftier bargains.
Like any clearance site, deals are hit & miss, but there are some crackers in amongst the dross. For example, the Epsom branch had a 42" 1080p Hitachi HDTV for £390. Now if I only had some spare cash...

Another Argos clearance option.

It's also worth checking out Argos' official eBay* shop 'argos-clearancebargains', which is the web trading arm of its three bricks & mortar clearance stores, in Corby, Walsall, and Stanley. Some clearance stock is cheaper here than it is in-store, some more expensive, and most the same price, but the range on offer makes it worth a look.
The vast majority of products it sells are brand new, and where items are refurbished it's clearly noted. One thing to remember though is it'll only accept PayPal payments, and you won't get the section 75 protection that a credit card offers (see Section 75 guide).
As Argos runs this clearance operation independently of its regular shops, you can't take things bought from its eBay shop back to high street branches; returns have to be posted back. You still get Argos's standard 12-month warranty though, on both new and refurbished stock. Read its About Me page for full info on the ins and outs.

Can you beat the price?
[/title]
As always, do your research: just because a product's in the clearance section doesn't mean it isn't cheaper elsewhere. So, before paying, check a couple of 'shopbots' - comparison sites which whizz around the web grabbing the cheapest prices for any given product. For detailed searches, which to use depends on what you're looking for (see the Online Shopping guide for a rundown), but big ones like Pricerunner*, Kelkoo* & Foundem are good for quick general searches.
* Using these links helps the site stay ad-free and free to use, as they’re ‘affiliated links’ which invisibly take you via price comparison services like Moneysupermarket or affiliate sites, this then means if you end up getting a product this site gets revenue
You shouldn’t notice any difference, the links don’t impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things we write) is NEVER impacted by the revenue. If it isn’t possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, its still listed in the same way. The following link ebay.co.uk and argos.co.uk are identical unaffiliated link provided for the sake of transparency. Click on the following link for more details on how this site's financed.

Just been on the Argos website and they seem to have a new clearance option whereby you can choose to look at clearance items in your local stores (though I saw a few out of stock items)
