Travel insurance with good illness & cancellation cover?

We are going on a trip to South Africa in a months time. I am 18 weeks pregnant, and want to be sure that I am well covered if I fall ill.

Also, we have just heard that an elderly relative is very unwell, and there is a chance that we may have to cancel the holiday outright anyway.

We have yet to organise travel insurance. I should add that my partner and our 2 year old would be included in the policy.

I can't find a way of searching for travel insurance deals that incorporate good illness cover and cancellation. To be honest, I don't know where to begin! :embarasse

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

maybe start by checking with your bank to see what sort of travel insurance they could offer you or a couple of local travel agents as they offer various levels of insurance and you may get the extra cover that you want

Unfortunately as you know that your relative is seriously ill it is now too late to take out insurance to include cancellation of the holiday should she become even more seriously ill.

For pregnancy most travel insurers will cover you provided you're not more than 28 weeks pregnant at the time of the holiday so you should be OK there.

Thanks Alasdair. With the danger of sounding mercenary about it, the sick relative is very old, being cared for by someone else. Essentially we are expecting to go to a funeral any time soon. I guess the same situation applies.

i'm not sure if this info is any use, but I have just taken out a new policy and was told that I wasn't covered for 'pre-exsisting' health conditions of non-travellers. I presume this is the norm. I had to get cover for my own health condition (unlikely to effect travel but you have to declare everything) and I was asked if there was any reason that i thought i would have to cancel- so again, if there is reason you think you might have to cancel, then you won't be covered. There maybe someone who is willing to cover you on your terms but i imagine the premium will be high.
    Thanks
  • As far as I can tell, pregnacy is usually not classed as an illness in travel insurance, but can be in the list of exclusions or health exclusions. So you should be fine for most policies up to about 28 weeks. Do read the small print (as I have been doing) to check that you would be covered.
