How to stop polyester fraying?

Sorry if this isn't the right place but I know someone on here must be able to help.

I'm really annoyed. Bought a brand new pair of polyester shorts for the gym and after the first wash they have frayed in several places like in the picture.

They weren't expensive and they're only for the gym, but that's beside the point. What am I doing wrong as this seems to happen to most polyester stuff of mine (gym wear, football wear). :(

    Is that fraying?

Looks like you've clicked them / caught a thread to me. If this is the case gently ease the pulled thread back. Alternatively you could sew the thread to the back of the fabric and knot it.

I thought that was fraying! :o

No you're right the threads are coming out, but it's doing it in the washing machine? Why? :(

ETA: How the hell do you pull it back through? :rotfl:

You turn the shorts inside out and with a needle or pin pull back (into the the inside) the threads that protrude on the outside. :)

The only way is to have a good look ss. If you can't pull the threads back because they are all scuffed, then the area must have been rubbed rather harshly.

If this is happening in the washing machine, put these polyester items inside a pillowcase when you wash them.

It's the thread fibre's that look fluffy. The centre of the pull is in the middle.

You could try easing the fabric away from the centre towards the outside of the pull. It should go back.

The shorts are getting caught on something. ie: teeth of a zip, ends of the plastic shorts draw string, easily something on another item of clothing.

As Q says....wash them inside one of the special bags you can get or a tied pillow case. [Great for stopping clothes getting stretched when spinning too.]

  • I honestly feel like crying. All my gym/football gear is polyester and it's getting ruined when I wash it. It all gets little nicks in it and you end up getting those fray lines and bits of material hanging out.

I do as it says on the label, no conditioner. I even put the stuff in a pillow case, but it all ends up coming out.

I don't know whether it's the cycle I'm putting it on. I don't understand washing machines but everything gets put on a rapid 40 degree wash which comes under the cotton menu, at either 30 or 40 degrees. Should I be putting it on the delicate 40 degree wash instead? It seems to be a shorter spin cycle which is where I assume the damage is occuring? :undecided

Or is it the washing machine thats knackered? I don't understand why it happens. It doesn't go in with zips or anything like that!

    :(

I have no idea who you share your home and washing machine with.............but is it possible that there is a wire (from a wired bra) or something else sticking in the drum which is causing the damage?

Have you tried slowly turning the washing machine drum and smoothing your hand all over it.................to detect any foreign bodies/things sticking out?

Are any other (non sporting) garments affected?

Live alone Nile, so no bra wire or anything like that. Well not that want to tell you about. :p :rotfl:

Off to check the drum now. Don't know why I didn't think of that. :o Edit: drum is as smooth as a babies bum.

Nope, all other clothes are fine. It's only ever polyester. :undecided
