travelling alone - how & where??

If you do a search you will find other threads on the subject that had a lot of replies (within the last month)
I just get up and go places on my own and it's great.
I agree with what others suggest, but try companies like explore, intrepid. imaginative traveller, guerba, dragoman etc etc
These companies go to all over the world with like minded people in small groups. You still have freedom to do what you want, but cost kept down due to travelling in a group.
Normally........... in my experience, there's a higher ratio of female to males on these trips as girls prefer to travel in groups whereas guys are happy to travel independantly. And there are the occasional couples, but mostly people travelling on their own.
You can do it !! Don't let being single stop you from travelling the world.****************************0 -
thanks to all for the tips.
i quite like the idea of the bus trek with dragoman. I am looking into this further.
Someone recommend what is the best weekend paper that has a decent travel section that i can use to get ideas of travel companies offering cheap flights and good travel articles to read.0 -
Look at the FAQ's at the top of this page as it lists lots of travel companies that are good for cheap flights.
Even ones like STA, flightcentre, trailfinders etc are great and not just for students. Just go with which ever one you feel is best for you
Don't know much about best newspaper for travel ideas, but www.wanderlust.co.uk is the best travel magazine going (available in WH Smith and big newsagents, aswell as Rohan Clothes stories)
They have contacts of all the above.
For info on specific places you might want to go to, try the forums on www.tripadvisor.com www.virtualtourist.com and lonelyplanet thorntree forums
Dragoman are great. I did an 8 week Capetown to Nairobi trip with them a few years back and they were the best of all the African camping companies. Highly recommend them.****************************0 -
Hi,
I'm taking the plunge for the first time this year and travelling alone. after a similiar post on this site re single supplements (how to avoid), I was pointed to vjv.co.uk (Voyages Jules Verne). they are part of Kuoni Travel now btw.
They do quite a few offers for single travellers where you don't pay any single supplements. I've chosen to go to Jordan and am off there in 2 weeks time.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -

Id just like to encourage anyone reading this thread who might be considering travelling alone, but who might be scared. I was in that position a few years ago and when I finally took the plunge I have never looked back. I even completed a full year round the world trip seeing so many places I always dreamed of, and fulfilled a lifetime's ambition. :j
You can do it! :T What kick started me and kept me going was a saying I heard;
" You will regret the things in life you dont do, more than the things you do!"0 -

I always travelled on my own until I had children. It is much better as you can do what you want when you want and not have to worry about what anyone else wants to do.
I would start with somewhere quite easy like Holland or Germany and then slowly move further east wards with each holiday.
Dont be worried about travelling on your own. Take a good book with you, a puzzle book or something like that and a music player and the time will fly by and you'll feel so proud of yourself when you get there.
This year I'm going to Cairo on my own with 2 small children!!!2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
THANKS for the messages of support. I was thinking before i take the long distance plung mayeb do a short holiday to say Scotland, Cork (cheap easy jet flights) or Amsterdam.
Is 2-3 night sufficient for a single person backpacking?? I still find the idea daunting, as even with a book -where does one read in a hotel/hostel room?
I not keen on the idea of eating on my own too...is that something to just accept that on some days it will happen?
Anyone suggest a good place in scotland or is Cork or Amsterdam which is best for a first timer?
(although i am planning a visit to Norway to see some friends there for a few days later this summer.so thats a start!)0
