False Economy Fashion

  • Fab thread spain shopper!! Most things cheap are false economy, 'you pay cheap you pay twice' i would much rather have decent second hand of excellent quality than cheap. The ONLY two exceptions i have with this is the primark vests/t-shirts with Lycra and their accesories. I buy these at the beginning of the season, then at the end i relegate them for bedwear. I do like a bargain so will always have a mooch in the sales ( i have a next clearance over the road from me) i hate cheap shoes, they just hurt and end up being binned after a couple of wears.

I'm the same with kids clothes aswell. I buy dd's clothes from next/m&s and debenhams. When she outgrows them i sell them on ebay so i feel i can justify the expense. In times gone by she has had a lots of stuff from primark and i reckon i spent more on the primark bashes than i do now. Now i choose good quality and have fewer outfits for her to wear. I recently culled her wardrobe and was shocked at how much primark stuff had faded/shrunk. My boys tend to mainly wear football kits, again they only have a few of these but they are easily washed and dried.

Quality over quantity every time!! (god i sound like my mother......)

They do say it happens to us all!

I agree with most of the comments about Primark, and the maxim of buying good quality second hand rather than cheap new stuff.

    Love the thread.

But I disagree with the above sentiment. Its just that in my opinion, particularly when I've bought Diesel or Miss Sixty clothing I've found they've lost their shape after the first wash. So now I tend to just stick to quality, natural fibres and not made in some sweat shop in Asia.

Elsewhere on MSE there is a lovely British fashion designer: her insight in to manufacture and sales of fashion are enlightening and thoughtful.

Can you point me in the right direction?

My style tends to be quite edgy/quirky. I love anything indie, upcoming, one off or just simply different.

I'll send her a pm with a link to this thread. She's one of those internet friends I think of as a real life friend too, she writes vividly and compellingly about her work (and life) and she's just lovely.

Definitely agree about the winter coats - last winter I decided to buy two cheaper coats from New Look, instead of one from Next etc..... that was such a mistake! I must have worn them twice each - they were itchy (not 100% wool), uncomfortable and the arms were too short, so they will most likely be getting relegated to the charity pile this year! Before then, for years, I've always bought good quality coats and they have lasted me years - so much better value for money!

Shoes and underwear too - definitely get what you pay for there I think!!

    xx

WHY are the arms always too short?! I don't understand that at all. :rotfl:

Then i would take the item straight back. Buying what you expect to be a good brand gives you a little insurance, but if it was from primark it would just go in the bin iyswim. I will always look for quality, be it in a charity shop or department store. Cheap items allways let me down and i inevetibly have to replace it.

  • Yes, I agree with evans shoes - they always last really well and are comfortable. But drop 1 size down.
Also thinking about bad buys I have to mention ebay. Not often pleased and have put lots straight in the charity bag.

On the hair front i have to mention Paul Mitchell. Costs abit more but lasts me ages. If i'm feeling cheap I buy aussie shampoo & conditioner. still good but not quite great.
