Well I do like Primark at the moment as my daughter has turned into a fashionista and will simply discard anything that she thinks is out of fashion . She likes Primark too but I'm sure in a few years she will be turning her nose up and want high end highstreet so I'll make the most :D.

Anyway my false economy fashion has to be catalogue shopping. It just never worked for me. I used to get Laredoute each season and get all excited and order over so much so I get free this that and the other ...then be really disappointed when they arrive, they don't quite fit or the fabric is not what it looked like on the pic. I know I can send them back but I convince myself that I will get some accessory to make it look fabulous. The thing with me is I just like getting clothes and am reluctant to give them back :D.

    No more catalogues for me

Totally agree about the catalogue thing, when my sister and I were in our tween years, we used to get to pick a couple of outfits each, Argos additions, la redoute etc, and when they arrived, they were never as good as the pictures. I remember one particular season there were mix and match bikini stuff, and when we went to Spain that year there were about 10 other women (some old), who had some of the selection on - arg! we never wore them again after that!

I tend to buy a mixture of cheap and expensive. For classic items I will always use like shirts and jeans and jackets I will pay more, because I'll want to keep wearing them. But if I fancy a yellow t-shirt for god knows what reason I'll get it at primark because chances are I'm going to get rid of it within a year because I don't like it anymore.

I have found some great buys in there though - like their padded t-shirt bras that go up to a G cup I think - I have a couple of those and they are fantastic value for money at less than £5.

I love quality clothing but hate paying for it - that's why I buy second hand or knock-down end of sale stuff. Our local M&S always reduces it's bras and pants to 50p at the end of the sale so I stock up for the year.

Cheap bras, pants, bikinis and shoes are definately false ecomony as is anything worn on a daily basis like coats, jeans and jackets.
  • I like buy fairly classic items in the end of season sale but then I put them away. I have just bought a beautiful white skirt reduced to £13.00 which I will save until my winter holiday. Sometimes I buy sale t shirts and save them til next spring.

My cheap no-nos, further to many listed above:

Anything black cheap I tend to be wary of, especially if in something wih a percentage of man mad fibre (e.g. lycra/elastane)

Anything not high percentage (or totally) natural fibre: even if well cut and pretty it will still look like a poly something and go shiny and be hot to wear in summer:(

Any shoes that are a bargain but a size too small or large (yeah, I've done this more than once: I used to kid myself a size up was good for night time when I'd been on my feet all day if I saw shoes not in my size in sales.)

I guess anything from Primark that I buy is false economy as its the one place I go and spend a couple of hundred pounds at a time on bags and bags full of stuff. It sometimes gets worn once, most of it goes on ebay a month or so later, and its a waste really.

Great idea!! I love shopping too but i never pay full price.. i get my daughter and me.. all sorted for the autumm- winter in the summer sales.. things are dead cheap and they are great quality( Adams, Clarks, Oasis, Debenhams, River Island.. Asos leather shoes.. Gap ).. I always do this, since she was born and before that.. i only shop in the sales... so i do not feel bad about spendind money ( usually around £150 for the sale) but we are sorted for next season.
My hubby and I agree on that, we only shop in the sales... so it is actually first time in the year where i can buy things that "wanted " all season... but i try to be cleaver.. i buy classics and stock up on accesories too...

Cheap trainers for me. My mate thinks Im a snob cos I'll only wear Adidas, Nike or Reebok but I had the last laugh when we went to an outdoor gig and it was throwing down with rain - within a minute of getting out of the taxi, her el-cheapo no-name bargain-basement trainers had let in so much water she was squelching, whereas my Reebok Classics kept my feet bone-dry till the end of the night (11.30) Ok, my trainers may be stupidly expensive, but they support my feet and are lovely and comfy. Fortunately, mum has just come back from America, bringing with her two beautiful specimens of Nike-iness which should last me a while! :D

tara, know what you mean about the 2true mascara - I have a waterproof one from that range and its fab - wont budge in water and only cost me 1.99!!

About the ballet pumps though - I have a black sparkly pair from Evans and they are amazing - I have really wide feet and have had these for about a year and a half, and wear them to death - they are so comfy. I think some places just make their shoes better than others!

I have to agree with the sentiments expressed about shoes, underwear, coats and Jeans. I have to have good quality on all these, especially being "larger chested!"

However everything else I just buy what I fancy really.
