can my wife do a balance transfer to her own credit card account with abbey? thanks in advance

You're wife being an additional card holder doesn't make any difference - she doesn't have any rights to administer the account or initiate any balance transfers.
You can phone MBNA and initate a balance transfer from an Abbey card number to your MBNA card - the fact it's not your card doesn't matter, they'll charge you the fee and you become solely liable for it."A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0
