Garmin Sat Nav & Florida

Hi. Is it worth buying the Florida maps and taking my satnav with me?

Would I be able to plug it into the cigar lighter in my hire car (ie are they standard cigar lighters like the UK)?
:j I hope my comment helps :T

Yes, cigarette/cigar lighters are standard size & voltage, however we've never bothered with Sat Nav in the US, never felt it was necessary.

I bought one when I arrived. It was a tomtom one from Malmart supermarket for $99 (£65). It was brilliant. Takes a bit of stress out of driving in a place that you are not familiar, where they drive on the wrong side and when you have excited kids in the back seat.

It had all the parks pre programed as well as restaurants and supermarkets. If you have not been there before I would get one. or upgrade your one.

I have but mine on E-bay to get some of my money back (currently £41) so prety cheap option in my mind.

We use our gps when we go to the US. We downloaded a map for US off piratebay for our model (garmin nuvi) and loaded it onto a sd card and popped it into the memory card slot and works a treat..every time ;)

Why risk loosing/forgetting/stolen etc your sat nav - most hire co's here will supply them.

You have to search for "North America" - they don't (as far as I know) do maps specifically for Florida.
As for renting one - for a week's rental you will pay more than it would cost to buy one..and have nothing to take home...
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Used mine in Orlando last year, it was great particularly for my husband who hadn't been to Orlando before. Made things a lot easier.

I found ours amazing to have although it did take us the wrong way a couple of times....ie the service entrance to Hollywood Studios:rotfl:
And like some of the others have said, you can buy one for the price of hiring them there and then sell it on ebay when you get back.
