Reverse DNS and IP range - how to?

Say I have a block of public IP addresses, how do I create a nice list of IP addresses and domain names?

Cheers

If you are asking how to look up existing addresses, then you use the "nslookup" command for each one.

If you want to create your own entries using hosts files, then you can just edit your hosts file and put in one line for each address/name(s). You then copy the same hosts file to all of your systems (/etc/hosts in UNIX/Linux and <Windows>\system32\drivers\etc or thereabouts).

If you are running a DNS server (eg. in Windows server), then you need to create a reverse lookup table (of PTR records).

If you are using UNIX/Linux then the DNS service is known as BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Daemon). Some UNIXes and Linuxes have a utility to get you started that will take a hosts file and create all of the DNS tables to contain the same information.

    Thanks prowla

My scenario is I have an IP block of web-facing addresses my company owns. I also have a list of domain names for web sites. I want to pair them up.

Was thinking I could use Sam Spade, but I'll have to do it from home.

Also I was playing with the nslookup command. If I try the following from within my network:

    nslookup 192.168.23.45

    and I get back:

    *** mydnsserver.domain.com can't find 192.168.23.45L: Non-existant domain

Does that me that they haven't created a reverse lookup table?
