Please help! New telephone/broadband connection

Hello Money Savers,
I have just moved into a rented house and I want to set up a landline and broadband for the house. The house has been recently renovated and doesn't appear to have a phone line. There's definitely no connection box in the house but it does seem to have a wire that comes from the telephone pylon into the exterior wall.

I have seen the new connection offer from BT advertised on this site, but this is for 18 months and we really need a 12 month contract.
My confusion is that I don't know if I can look around to other suppliers, as the few I have looked at ask for a BT line. Is this the only way of getting a line and broadband?

I've been told that the road has been fitted with Virgin Media cables and this may be a solution, but I can't get through to their customer service to ask if they also require a BT line.

Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!

Virgin Media dont need a BT Line your need a Virgin cable phone line if you wish to recieve or make/calls.

Check your postcode to see if you can get service here: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/service.do?id=2

If you choose to end the BT free line connection contract within the 18 month minimum term, you will incur a single charge of £7.50(on the Unlimited Weekend and Unlimited Evening & Weekend plans) or £8.00(on the Unlimited Anytime plan) for each month left of the minimum term.

So if you took the service for say 12 months only you would have to pay a cancellation charge of £45/£48. Which of course is better then paying the normal 12 month contract connection fee of £125.;)
  • Thank you Ypaymore and OldGreyFox for the info. I didn't realise the cancellation charge was lower than the monthly service charge so that is a good option. Knowing I can get a Virgin line is great too, I just have to decide which is best for us now!
    Thanks again!

You would still have pay your monthly line rental from £11.25 a month (online billing) if you took BT phone service.
