I agree with everyone else who has said that your daughter should have had an alternative source of funds with her.

When my DH recently went abroad without me I made sure he had one debit card plus two credit cards (one Visa and one Mastercard) with PINs for all of them. I was fully expecting to get a phone call from one of the credit/debit card companies because of "unusual activity" because he was travelling through a number of countries within a few days. As it turned out I didn't get any phone calls (mainly, I guess, because he spent very little money), but his Switch/Maestro card did fail to work in Switzerland so he had to use one of the credit cards.

Expecting one card to work perfectly for a lengthy trip is a little foolish and you can't blame a bank for protecting both itself and the card carrier from possible card fraud.

If you want a trip abroad you need to open multiple bank accounts and apply for credit cards because of the bank's inadequacies.

It's a fair point about the bank's inadequacies but wouldnt that same have happened if she lost her debit card or had that stolen? That was the main reason that I took so many different forms of payment when travelling as I was afraid of losing a card and wouldnt want to be stuck somewhere with no money!

Unlucky experience....unfortunately it just goes to show that you really do need to have more than 1 source of funds when travelling, just in case the worst happens.

Maybe a Travelex Cash Passport or similar card, pre-loaded with a small amount (£100-£200) would be a good backup for the next trip.

Hope she enjoys the rest of her holiday, Thailand is a fabulous country! :)

Also, by having a Travelex Cash Passport you get free emergency assistance. If your Cash Passport was lost or stolen they would replace your funds via Western Union and also provide a message home service so no need to use your own phone a thousand times.
