Broken Microwave bought from Argos, what are my options?

Options
Problem is

Purchased microwave 6/7 weeks ago. Door on it has broken, as a spring has come off inside the door it seems.

I dont have the receipt from Argos anymore, though I do have my debit card statement that shows I purchased something from Argos for the same price (Just says payment to Argos). Also I do not have the box for the Microwave as I threw it out.

Is there anything I am able to do here. Or am I shafted without the packaging and receipt?

  • Take it back with statement and they should refund or replace. You don't say if it's Argos' own brand.

Hi there, i would definitely take it back. As you have your debit statement they should be able to pick up the sale from that as all the sales are on their computer records. You say its a debit statement, so i presume you paid by debit card? I once picked up a customers sale like this myself as she had lost her reciept, be prepared to be patient though as it will probably take a while. I wouldnt worry too much about the box either, not many people keep them, you didnt know it was going to break so soon after purchasing it did you? Give it a try, youve nothing to lose. Hope you get on o.k x

I read somewhere that as the shop legally doesn't have to give you a receipt its unreasonable to demand that the customer has it for a faulty item. I'll see if I can find the link.
Q7. Do I have to produce a receipt to claim my rights?

No. In fact the trader doesn't have to give you a receipt in the first place so it would be unfair to say that you had to produce one. However, it might not be unreasonable for the shop to want some proof of purchase, so look to see if you have a cheque stub, bank statement, credit card slip etc., and this should be sufficient.

You don't need a receipt but a bank statement should suffice.
To make things easier to trace go back to the store you purchased it from with your bank statement and the actual card, and using the card number the store can get the actual transaction from the audit logs off the tills.

For future reference (for anyone) that regardless if the item is an Argos brand of if you have the box alone for the item that this is not really proof enough of purchase, it needs to have a date and value on; having said that if the item is faulty you don't need the box, just all the parts that come with the item.

As expensive as Argos can sometimes be, I really can't fault their customer service from past experience. Take the microwave back, explain the situation, and they'll more than likely give you a replacement or a credit note. As has been suggested on here already, bring your bank statement along, just in case you do speak to an awkward staff member.
