  • My mum is in sheltered housing and should have one of these. She fell out of her bed one morning and when the warden buzzed to check she was ok she never gave her enough time to say no I'm not. She was badly bruised but nothing broken. Then she mentioned it to the warden this week and the warden was shocked, asking her why she hadn't pressed the button on the alarm she wears. What alarm? Said my mum. Warden told her she is supposed to have one and she is still waiting to get one!!! She has been there 3 months. It also sounds like the flat she is in is in a bad state of repair, several things need fixed but it takes weeks. Today her kitchen window came off its hinges and all the warden did was help her shut it and told her to open her door if she was cooking so she has fresh air!? Doesn't sound like it has been reported to anyone to be repaired. Really wish I could go over and have a look at the place she is living in, sounds like a complete dive. It's a 2 and a half hour drive but I really feel I am going to have to go over and shout and bawl at someone to get anything done. The company who manage the property recently had an inspection and the repair system they have in place was well under the national standard. I have no faith that she is safe and secure where she is. Who can I complain to? Tried the Housing Association but they told me no one was back in til Tuesday to deal with it and for the alarm to contact the warden. She does try to speak up for herself but nobody is taking her seriously, these people should have some sort of duty of care to make sure the place she is living in is of a safe and secure standard. They get enough money from the rent, etc.

Defintely enquire at their local council - they will be much cheaper than Age Concern Aid-Call and if your parents are on certain benefits they will be discounted if not free.

My nan really was very anti this until a lovely lady came round and explained it to her and she was sweetness and light

Bubblegumcola, believe it or not, the warden done what was expected of her with regards to the windows, sux but that's her job. I used to get told off all the time for doing things like calling in repairs for the tenants and helping them with stuff like that. Hence one of the reason's i'm now a postie instead :p With regards to the complaint, put it in writing, like any complaint, it's always taken more serious when in writing.

I know it's a 2.5 hr drive but plz make the effort to go and see the place, then u can write a list of repairs for the H.A and get it all sorted. Mum may feel that's something she can't do on her own. She could also have carers going in and out that u may be able to have a chat with, see if any of them would be able to report any ongoing repairs for her. Windows are a must, especially with winter coming up. Good luck.

I agree about the council, they may also see if there any other things that may help them.I also think is someone from outside the family explains the benefits your parents may be mor inclined to go ahead..Another thing to consider is a key to the door, what if something happened and no-one could answer the door to let help in.Someone we know has a keybox with code outside,so there is a key available as you never know if you can get there on time for example.
Good luck with getting them to consider it!!!!!!!! (they can be stubborn cant they!!)
 Am thinking of a new one:beer:
