I can't really give you any advice, but you sound like a very loving dog owner to me. My doberman has a lovely temperment, she is so gentle and loving but I wouldn't leave her alone with a toddler for a second. When my sisters little boy (3)sleeps over, they play together for hours, but if I need to even nip to the loo, Mia goes in the kitchen behind the dog gate. I would never put Mia in a position that she could hurt him. I can totally understand where you are coming from

    its a great idea.

i would say that if you can get a larger kennel now if will save you replacing as the dog gets bigger. You can get plastic ones now that would be ideal. Best best is take the dog to the pet shop and try one.

Dogs and children should never be left unsupervised and as you say the cage is for night time (we have a gsd which we do the same with)

You never know she may just like going out there and having some quiet time.

Although we tried and outside kennel for ours and he slept next to it!!! even when raining. lol

As you said in an earlier post, it's only for when you're cooking, and only for if it rains, I wouldn't bother wasting my money. If it rains let pup in the kitchen with you. How often does it happen that it begins to rain the exact moment you begin to cook, and stops raining the moment you stop cooking? Not worth the outlay IMO.
Don't dispair that it's all such hard work at the moment! A family all slots together eventually! Keep at it.

ps. For what it's worth I've got three dogs, visiting babies can crawl all over them, but I absolutely agree that I would never leave a dog alone with a child, however confident I am in the dog's temperament. In my experience, it's usually the kids that take the most training. My kids are 23, 21 and 16, so it's still a work in progress hahaha.

What about creating a dog lien too. It's like a canopy that is on brackets from the wall with that plastic corrugated stuff. you could try freecycle for an old kennel. Or maybe a pop up kiddie play tent that can easily be moved and cleaned.
slowly going nuts at the world:T
