Paypal Direct Debit mandate to be verified?

Do PayPal really need a direct debit mandate to become 'verified'? I'm a bit weary of allowing PayPal a DD mandate. I'm certain this was not necessary several years ago.

If it is necessary - has anyone given them the mandate, become verified, then revoked the DD mandate?

I have kept my direct debit mandate but it never gets used as i normally pay my fees each week or before the end of the month so there has never been a chance for the mandate to come out.

I think the DD mandate is one of the items you have to complete to get a verified account from when i opened my account 2 years ago but may have changed now

The fees you mention would be ebay fees, separate from paypal?
I recently had to do this, may cancel it as i cant see any point in it other than giving paypal access to my money.

Actually, i should really read what the DD was for before agreeing to it!

Looks like they have put some money in my account (which you then enter on the paypal site) but i have no DD showing on my online banking.
So all they can do is put money in my accont?

I did this last week. It takes a few days for the amount to show up on your bank account. After I confirmed what the 2 amounts were, on my Paypal account I still wasn't verified. Then I realised I had to fill in a part about what I expected my earnings to be and what type of things I was going to be selling on eBay. I just put in a rough (low) guess because I don't know how much i'll be selling!

You’re quite right, PayPal don’t really need a direct debit mandate for the verification process. They do, however, want to be able to take the money for your PayPal payments from your bank account by direct debit. This is much cheaper for them than taking money using your debit or credit card. So, they have linked the requirement of a direct debit mandate to the verification process.

I verified an account then told the bank to cancel the direct debit. I also removed the bank account from the PayPal account. I believe new direct debit rules state that any direct debit not used for thirteen months, or where the first payment isn’t taken within thirteen months of the mandate, automatically lapse and cannot be used.

That’s because the money being put in has nothing to do with allowing PayPal to take money out by direct debit. The money is put in using direct credit. You can think of this as the opposite of a direct debit, where a company pushes money into your account, rather than pulls it out. For a direct credit, PayPal doesn’t need your permission, just your bank details, which they get from the direct debit mandate. The direct debit, which is processed separately, should show up eventually.

Thanks for the responses - i've e-mailed ebay about this, but not had a resonable reply (it usually takes about 3 or 4 volleys of e-mail before you get anything useful out of them).

My original paypal account which is several years old - and verified - does not have a DD. I'm now trying to open an account for my wife, and they're asking for DD - which is very dangerous from my perspective.

They also state that once a DD is setup, it becomes the default method of payment! Gosh, isn't this a big money spinner for them!

At worst, I'll apply, then cancel the DD.

I had to fill this in as well 3 weeks ago but now Paypal keep taking all my auction transactions when I pay as a buyer via the direct debit instead of my registered credit card!

How do I stop this without removing my bank details in Paypal? I also sell so need to keep my bank details there to withdraw to.
  • Roses, when you go to pay for an auction via PayPal, on the invoice it usually defaults to your debit card (bank account) that you have on file e.g.

    Funding source: Switch/Maestro
    Card no. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

^ on the line underneath that in orange text (I think) it says something like 'other funding source' if you click that you will see a list of the cards that you have on file and you can just choose which card you want to pay with.
