Are they good or do you just prefer holding the receiver can you hear better?

Some of them are okay - it depends totally on the quality of the phone. Cheap speakerphones are terrible and are only really useful for when you're on hold, but at the higher end of the market, some of the better manufacturer's handsets (Panasonic, Siemens and BT Diverse) have decent speakerphones on them.

If you're going for a corded phone with a speakerphone, always look for the models which have a separate power supply if you want a better speakerphone as speakers powered by the line cord just aren't up to scratch.
