"Rail companies have been slammed by MPs for the huge hikes in fares this year. In some cases, prices are up by more than 11% at a time when many are struggling.

A relation of mine works offshore and has to buy open tickets to travel to Aberdeen, only valid for 1 month from date of issue. If he gets held on the rig due to bad weather, or can't get back off due to various problems then sometimes his initial return ticket is invalid and he has to purchase another one. A season ticket is funny money for the amount of trips he takes but why can't they make the open return ticket valid for say 3 months instead of 1 month?
