Wifi questions with Dell 5150, Acer SA60, Netgear DG834G, PSP, PDA etc

Options
Hi MSE Techies,

I hope someone can help me out .........

Ok, I have an Acer SA60 Desktop connected to a Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Firewall Router with 4-port 10/100 switch with my current ISP being AOL (Silver).

Upstairs I have a Dell 5150 Deskstop which is connected to the internet with a Netgear WG111 Wireless 54Mbps USB 2.0 Adapter getting the signal from the aforementioned modem.

q1 - Is the use of the wireless adaptor necessary for me to get the signal from the modem I have downstairs? I have no qualms using the adapter since it came free with the modem, but I am thinking of getting a laptop added to the network so in the future I may have to shell out the £20-25 for the adapter.

q2 - what will happen if I want to get a pda and/or psp online? I know these gadgets don't have USB ports .......... anyone have any experience on how this is done? I think this question ties in with question 1! I don't own a PSP/PDA yet, but if I cannot get them online then I wont buy them!

Thanks in advance for the advice offered :p It took me a whole day to get everything configured so I am a bit of a wifi novice!

    Hi, bookshifter,
Basically you will need a wireless adapter for each PC/Laptop that you require to access the internet,of course you do also have the option of connecting to your Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Firewall Router with 4-port 10/100 switch by using a CAT5 cable. I believe that Tesco have an offer on for a Linksys PCMCIA laptop card priced @ £9.99

Regarding connecting a PSP for online use a quick Google threw up the following that might be of use, http://gaming.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=4339
  • If you buy a laptop, they usually come with integrated wireless though no adapter would be needed!

The PSP AFAIK has wireless? I may be completely wrong, but once again any device with wireless connection will work on the network no problems! If it doesnt have wireless you may have trouble getting it through the router without going through a computer first via a datacable.
