'How much do you spend on holiday?' poll discussion

  • It does depend on where we are going, if visiting Florida I budget £500+ per person per week as a minimum due to us eating out 99% of our meals and all wanting to buy new stuff while there, we often come home with extra suitcases to what we take. My view is that we watch everything we spend so closely all year, that I don't want to while on holiday, it's a holiday after all.

If we go camping in France I only budget £100 per person per week as we cook more and eat out less, we then spend more on trips and activities rather than clothes, where in Florida theme park tickets are paid for already at a cost of around £125 pppw. So France is a cheap holiday & Florida a not so often holiday, but this year there is no holiday at all.

    Last holiday -

    3 flights to Las Vegas - £800
7 nights in Venetian LV - £FREE as I complained when I got home!
4 nights in Ritz Carlton -£500
    Food - £500
    Other - 450

£2250/3=750/11 =68 x 7 = £477 per person per week for a five star getaway - thanks to the power of the complaint!

    Nonethisyear :(

I am going on hols abroad (Spain) with partner 2 weeks cost £300 per person (including flights, transfers and 3 star self catering).

We will take about £600 spends between us and a credit card if needed for emergencies.

We don't buy new clothes for our hols as we spend most of the time on the beach in swim wear and the only cost is maybe my sun lotion which I always buy P20 although expensive the best for a tan and protection!!!!

    xx

I said 71 -200 but that is mainly on food. we go camping in france and I cook most of the time if not all. Other than food, we spend mostly on wine or beer, but thats not too much. If I excluded food it would be in the lowest bracket for a couple.

Based upon the text "Yet many lose all budget constraints and just spend when they get there", it sounds as if you are interested in whether people budget effectively. But looking at the way the question is written, plus the spread of answers, I do no think any conclusions can be drawn about budgeting.

Another poll you could have had would be ask if the reader:
    - had no budget and did know how much they spent whilst away
    - had no budget and did not know how much they spent whilst away
    - had a budget and spent 50% or less of this whilst away
    - had a budget and spent 51-85% of this whilst away
    - had a budget and spent 86-115% of this whilst away
    - had a budget and spent 116-150% of this whilst away
    - had a budget and spent 151% or more of this whilst away

I know a lot have said it depends 'where' you are going on holiday, but surely where you go depends on what you can afford?
Maybe I'm the only one who has to choose the destination based on available funds??

    FWIW - I chose A anyway;)
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.
  • In addition to what I said before, assuming I was going on holiday...

I currently want to go to great places like India, China, etc. Places like these are once in a lifetime, especially if you're as broke as me. So yes, I'll spend money on seeing the sites, eating the local food etc and buying souvenirs if I want them, but I would haggle, and take advantage of freebies and discounts if available of course.

For me holidays are mainly for relaxing with a pile of books - I can spend money at home.
Heh that's interesting - my wife and I are pretty much the exact opposite! We can relax & read books at home - but when you're on holiday you have a long time to not think about work, so spending money on stuff gives a bigger benefit imo.

I spend about 300 per person away (the mrs. and I) so not the most but it depends where we go. I spent much more in Rome doing the sights than I did in Marjorca because we did less stuff and most of it was free.
Date I decided to clear my debt: 03/12/08
    Debt started with: Loan - 2195, Credit Card - 1738, Interest free overdraft -500 = TOTAL - 4433
    Current Debt: Loan - 0, Credit Card 1 - 1346, Credit Card 2 - 906 Interest free overdraft -0 = TOTAL - 2252
