After 30 years of faithful service, my Hoover Electronic 1100 appears to be slowly dying, and is leaving puddles on the floor. It had a major hissy fit last night and belched out loads of water all under the fitted units. After much mess and mopping up, we have checked the outlet pipes, to make sure water isn't siphoning out (its not) and we have also run another wash through. This time there wasnt floods of water, but there was a small puddle underneath. Not sure if this has been going on for a while because if it was a small leak, it would have just dried out inbetween uses.
I've lost confidence in it now and think its time to get a replacement, but Ive heard so many horror stories I want some advice from people about what to avoid, and any recommendations that you might have too.
I don't want an all singing all dancing machine, just a boring and reliable one that will replace my old friend.

Ican't say too much as I am looking for a washing machine also (just for bog standard and not all singing & dancing).
I have seen 1 on tesco site for
 Indesit WIB111 White Washing Machine
Catalogue number: 202-1183 at £229.99 it seems to have some good reviews, but I was wondering if anyone else can recommend a washine machine of low price and good quality.
 Cheers0

Personally I would go for cheap and cheerful and replace it when it breaks... We bought a bottom of the range Beko 10 years ago and its running perfectly (never broken down at all, never use Calgon and we are in a hard water area, etc) while I have a friend who bought a posh Hotpoint washing machine for 3 times the price and it breaks down once a year... It seems that whatever brand you buy these days, they are generally not built to last and cost a fortune to fix, so you are better off buying cheap and cheerful IMHO 0 0

Based on my experience I'd say avoid Hotpoint. Can you see if your library has a "Which?" subscription as they will not award a "Best Buy" to machines that are unreliable even if they otherwise have a high score (IIRC).0

Would thoroughly recommend any of the Bosch models0

You could go two ways with this - buy cheap and expect to replace it regularly ( my local washing machine repair told me that some manufacturers now charge so much for spare parts it often works out cheaper to buy a new machine)
Or you could invest in a quality machine that will last. This is what I chose to do 5 years ago, I bought a Miele and have not regretted it at all. They are built like tanks and expected to last around 20 years in normal household if looked after, i.e. do not overload and let the motor cool down between loads.

I would go for a basic model of Miele, you will get the top build quality and enough programmes for your needs. If you are like me you`ll tend to use the same couple of wash programmes most of the time.0

I bought bosch BOS WAE24467 1200RPM one from pixmania last year and with surprise it get delivered and installed by curry's !! Much cheaper price and installation cost than curry's and you get curry's stuff !!!

Try and decide things like spin speed and capacity first. I wanted a machine that would hold at least 6kg so that I could wash my quilts witout paying to go to the laudrette once a year. I aslo wanted at least 1200rpm spin speed as its easier to get stuff dry especially bulky things like quilts! Also I wanted a A energy rating These sort of things will cut down your choices.
If it is not urgent you could try the comet auction site, I got a Seimens washing machine from there for £400 instead of £600 but you have to be a bit patient. I am very impressed with this machine but I did want one at the top end of hte market as I was fed up with replacing cheap ones0

            Can agree with the above:
I have a Bosch- excellent IMO, works v.well and is fairly quiet.
My mum has a Hotpoint -(she used to have a Bosch)- and buying a Hotpoint was the worst decision she made- its so NOISY! The ground shakes, the volume on the TV has to be almost top-wack just to override the noise and don't even think about using it at night (to use cheaper electricity) unless your used to sleeping on the floor in a drum and bass club!0
