Have a sniff, and a small taste. If they smell and taste OK, they'll probably be OK :D They'll hardly become poisonous overnight :p

  • In theory no. Anything with a USE by date you should discard, but I would eat them. I agree with Penelope Penguin

Me too :) I've eaten yogurts that were a week "out of date" and they were absolutely fine.

PP is right - our mothers never had dates to go by - they used their noses and common sense!

    So should we!

I have eaten yoghurts 2/3 days past their date which smelled ok.....and junked stuff that I knew was off before it's date!

Play it by ear....or should that be nose?

I've got family that used to live in the Faukland Islands (many years ago). Many things, including yoghurts used to be shipped out from the UK, which meant that by the time they arrived they were always passed their dates. This meant that regularly there were only two options: 1) open the out of date food and if it was ok (90% of the time) then they ate it, 2) go hungry!

As others have said: open it, smell it, taste it. If it's ok, eat it. If not, bin it! (Only a day past the date, I expect they will be fine)

Dairy can be funny anyway. I have had milk that is defo off before the use by date and sometimes fine past the date. This can be 2 or 3 days each way. Therefore I treat use bys as a guide, although a stricter guide than best before dates. Trust your nose and taste buds.
DS used to go to his grans before and after school when I went back to work for a while. She once gave him a brand new unopened bottle of milk well within date to pour on his cereal. One mouthful and he spat it out yuck it was off. He has never forgot and now always uses his nose irrealevent of the date. Was a tesco milk just in case anyone wondered.

The Muller Rice has sealed foil lids- if they are still flat then the contents should be fine - sniff to check.
If the lid has a domed appearance then the chances are that the contents have started to ferment/go off - lid to bin, contents to compost and washed pot to recycling!

Go hopefully into each new day, enjoy something from every day no matter how small, you never know when it will be your last
