Rotisserie chickens are lovely fresh but not convinced on how well they keep.

I bought one last Saturday when they were cheap, let it cool down and used it for dinner on Sunday and it was fine. Also used it for stir fry, etc. during the week with no problems!

They mark them down around half an hour before the store closes.

Friday night is Morrisons shop + cooked roast chicken for a lazy dinner for us. They go cheap if you hit it at just the right time, but also disappear fast. I saw someone take six. What were they going to do with them? Rotisserie chickens are lovely fresh but not convinced on how well they keep.

You can take the meat off the bone and freeze it to use whenever.

That's what I usually do too. I use some on Saturday to make a curry and have the rest on Sunday for dinner.

  • Ex used to work servicing and repairing instore catering equipment for the big supermarkets. This included fridges, freezers, proving ovens, and the rotisserie. He had the authority then to instruct the shops to close their sections if he felt there was a health hazard to the public, whether through hygiene/cleaning issues or any other form of contamination/lack of safe storage/preparation facilities. I believe this has changed as the stores insisted people had no influence on trading decisions.

He has never, and will never - ever - even consider touching a rotisserie chicken and is always very suspicious of bakery products (he checks underneath the shelves for signs of pests near the bakery and the pet food section). His sister is scared of touching fresh chickens, so will only ever use rotisserie ones. He will not eat there on those days.

He is a fairly unadventurous eater, but roast chicken seems such an innocuous thing. He will eat it quite happily if it is cooked at home. But he will never touch it from the supermarket. It made me think about how bad the conditions must be behind the scenes...
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

I bought two extra-tasty chickens reduced to half price on Friday and made stock from the bones over the weekend. To be fair they made the nicest stock ever, it even smelled like roast chicken whilst cooking!

Extra tasty: Once they were out of the normal ones and only had extra tasty left. I asked what the seasoning was as OH has to be gluten-free.

It's salt! That's all. So for 50p or £1 extra you can have your chicken with some salt.

Yep, it's a salt bath, but it does make them taste better. They reduced the quantity of salt in it last year and it adversely affected the flavour IMO.

I used to work on the oven fresh department in Morrison's, Clevedon, and things that I witnessed have put me off their 'fresh' chickens for life!

One time I was asked to borrow some garlic seasoning from the butcher and coat some chickens and pieces before putting them in the oven...the reason being that they had gone a couple of days past their use by date and where beginning to smell! The cooking of out of date meat is common.

The chicken prep area was often left uncleaned, even over night, with chicken pieces and blood left rotting on the table...the same table where further chickens would later be prepped...chicken parts also ound their way onto the floor and left, leading to a infestation of mice.

Staff are supposed to use a thermometre to check that the chickens are cooked through, but all too often they don't bother and end up putting under cooked chicken out for sale. When they do check, they often don't clean the probe afterwards. On several occasions there were cases of food poisoning linked to our store, we only got away with it through lack of proof in each case.

As a previous poster said, Extra Tasty actually means soaking in salt water...that's it.

I ended up quitting because I didn't agree with the practises going on.
