    Hi madp,

It’s perfectly normal to receive prepayment statements for prepayment energy accounts; they serve as your record of payments made into the meter against the amount of energy you use between meter readings.

Although you pay as you go on a prepayment meter, it is possible for a debt to show. This could be the result of a number of things.

The most likely reason for a debt on a prepayment account is recalibration. This is where there has been a change in unit rates, and the meter has not been amended to charge you at the new rates.

In effect your meter takes money for electricity at one price but the bill shows the charges at the new electricity price.

Is the prepayment meter a key meter or a token meter?

The key type should have automatically been recalibrated by a global electronic message that is sent out to all devices; however these are sometimes not picked up by the key correctly.

The older token type meters need to be recalibrated manually; therefore if no one has been to the property to do this the meter may be charging incorrectly.

The important thing to do is establish how this debt has built up, contact E.ON and ask them to explain how this has happened.

The answers will lie in the meter settings, call up and be ready to take the settings from the meter; E.ON will help you with this and then look at the settings to figure out the probem.

Ask them to put a hold on any demand letters whilst this is being investigated.

Could be as simple as having incorrect change of supply readings when you left them for that short while.
