I think if you can find your way to this site, you probably know all you need to know
Exploring the internet is so much fun - just get stuck in there! If you go to https://www.google.co.uk you can put in search words and choose sites which relate to subjects you are interested in.
By the way (just in a friendly spirit as part of your education) you are (probably!) not a computer nerd - just yet. Nerds are people who are obsessed by whatever it is, and computer nerds are usually very very knowledgeable. You are a computer newbie
Happy surfing:):):):)

Are you sure you need a book? Afterall, you found your way here to these forums well enough.
Here's some online resources:
BBC Guide to using a computer here
BBC's Absolute Beginners Guide to using a computer here
Internet 101 here
Learn The Net here
As for books, there are the Dummies Guides here they probably have a book on how to run your life if you look long enough
Or there are the Complete Idiots Guides here
Both the "Dummies" and the "Idiots" guides can usually be found in your nearest bookshop or at places such as https://www.amazon.co.uk
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -

doh!!!!!! told you i was a bit dim!!!!!!!!!!!!!
although i do seem to be getting a little obsessed with MSE site.
to cut a long story short, recently split with fiance who had a computer and messed about on his...so ive done some ebayin and stuff. also i am self employed and have got about a years worth of receipts i want to put on disc for tax stuff. my lovely ex plonka promised to sort this out for me but that was shoved to one side along with me . his sky footie and boys nights and hiding his 21 grands worth of debt were more important!
hey ho.
MANY THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY :T0 -
If you want to put receipts onto disk, you need to learn to use lovely Excel - which is your friend in SUCH a big way
Seriously, it's a really useful and clever programme which will save you loads of calculations.
I'm afraid I don't know any good resources for learning that except that the best resource is a friend to show you how to do things - have you got Excel on your computer? Do you know anyone who uses it?Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
hiya jobbingmusician, no i havent got excel but it sounds familiar. i think thats what my ex used. any idea how i get it?
he did say he'd email it to me but a, he said a lot of things and im still waiting
and b, wouldnt know what to do with it anyway!!!
hence the need for a good book!!0 -

am trying to find the one about running my life cuz so far i've made a right hash of it ( or rather other people have!! ) lol :rotfl:
many thanks0 -
I'd try to get the one from your ex if possible, as it's quite expensive (it's a lot cheaper if you are a student or a charity!) - it's published by Microsoft and widely available, just google Microsoft Office Home Edition. Someone might be able to tell you how to get it cheap (I've heard rumours that MS - which is short for microsoft by the way - are letting people have some of their programmes free on a site somewhere, but I might be confused about this!)
Excel for Dummies would teach you all you need to know. Good luckEx board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
