How far can a 5 Million Pixel Photograph be blown up to, without blur etc?
Will it go onto a Canvas?
(taken with a consumer camera, not an SLR)

That's an open question, as long as you are far enough away to view it, it will look ok at any size...?
However what you need to know is the printing DPI. Take your photo resolution say 640 x 480 and look at the first figure 640 (dpi) now printing at 150 DPI this equates to 4.2 inches (640 / 150) print size. HTH0 -
You should be able to get a decent sized print a canvas is unlikely to be output at any higher than 200dpi, and providing the image is sharp and well focused.
5MP is roughly 2580 x 1944 pixels on a sensor, so your images will contain this many pixels.
At 300dpi you could output at 21.84cm x 16.46cm
At 250dpi, 26.21cm x 19.75cm
and 200dpi: 32.77cm x 24.69cm
On a laser photographic output (such as that used by high street labs) you'd be fine at 200dpi.
Just goes to show that cameras with high mega-pixels are just marketing hype for the majority of users.0 -
There are plenty of cameras around with a high megapixel count but a compromise lens. The large numbers of megapixels only serve to highlight the deficiences in the lens.
I have a Canon 400D DSLR and a Casio Exilim EX-FC100 compact which is easier to slip in a pocket. The difference in sensor resolution is small 10.1 v 9.1 megapixels but the difference in image quality is hugely in favour of the DSLR.
If you want to blow up a picture to around A3 size then a compact camera probably won't give very good results regardless of the number of megapixels on the sensor.0
