at the moment i am on ntl for my home phone.have seen cheaper deals but need to be on a bt line,if i go back to bt ,can i change rightaway to maybe talk talk.or another supplier or do i have to stay with bt for a certain time before changing over

I think you'd be tied to BT for your line rental for 12 months if it's a new installation or 3 months if it's a reconnection.
In either case, I'd still recommend not transferring your line rental to one of the re-sellers after that period (see the 'HERE' link in my signature for reasons).
OTOH, I'd recommend going for a CPS and/or other ways of saving on your calls as soon as the BT line is connected.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
