My sis has been advised to invest in property

Just to clarify that I have no objection to investments being drip fed onto the markets if one wishes to do so as I was not in any way referring to the markets for the moneys investment just that it is better to be in cash than talked into property investment by any bank at this stage.
Like most commentators I have no idea where markets will go!!0 -
I am in a similar situation to your sister, I too have some money to invest and have been looking at places to put my money.
Have you/she thought about investing it in property, I have spent a lot of time researching where the money should go and I am not sure stocks and shares are where I trust at the minute but I did read an interesting report on property and how it always rises again (due to supply and demand) and people always need somewhere to live.
I am now seriously considering it now and have looked into property courses just to make sure that I am truely committed to the decision as it is a big investment. I searched on the internet and found a company called Property Mentor who are offering free property courses. To be honest free has nearly swung it for me but I was just wondering if anyone else had heard of the company Property Mentor? good idea?0 -
Invest in owning her own home? Thats fine but btl would be something else, housing is a great long term investment and has alot of tax breaks. Get a fixed rate and hopefully it will offset any further price falls but theres nothing wrong with buying a house so long as you are considering it over 20 years
The other alternative would be her pension fund0 -
It may well take years for a property to recover after a fall to get back to it's previous peak value. What is it paying you during that time? No dividends or interest payments that's for sure.littleearner wrote: »I did read an interesting report on property and how it always rises again (due to supply and demand) and people always need somewhere to live.
How do you want to get exposure to property? Do you want to be a landlord, or just buy units in a property fund?
Have you asked yourself why they would be offering the courses for free? What's in it for them?littleearner wrote: »I am now seriously considering it now and have looked into property courses just to make sure that I am truely committed to the decision as it is a big investment. What do you want to learn from the course? How to make money from property?0 -

So you think property always rises again but shares dont? Yet shares have outperformed property despite both being volatile investments. You should really treat both as assets that can and will go down as well as up. The biggest difference is going to be taxation (you cant really hold property in a tax wrapper) and liquidity. To be honest free has nearly swung it for me
Free because they try to get you to buy overpriced properties on the courses. One of the oldest property scams going.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

Not much in the way of suitability checking then? So if you're a low-paid, inexperienced octagenarian all you need do is borrow a few hundred grand and away you go :rolleyes:18 or 80, employed or student, part time or full time worker, beginner or experienced property investor.
