Broken Breville Microwave out of warranty!

I purchased a Breville Microwave (£60) from Tesco on 12/7/07 and when I went to use it on 13/7/09 it didn't work! How convenient, just 2 years old! When I emailed Breville they told me that it only had 1 years warranty, but I'm sure I saw something on TV not so long go about electrical products and that you may still be able to get a replacement? Any help??

We do have a Sale of Goods act in the UK, you know, giving you 6 years in which to claim for faulty goods! Though it may not really be worthwhile pursuing...you'd most likely have to get an engineer to confirm that it's a fault not caused by misuse, then contact Tesco, and they will, in all probablity, give you a partial refund (it's not really cost effective to repair). You'd be lucky to get £30.
You have changed the fuse and checked the obvious things, right?Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

Yes, that was possibly as a result of a 'Daily Mail' article that suggested there was a 2 year European warranty on anything electrical it's here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1187190/EU-law-gives-consumers-year-guarantee-goods-kept-secret-retailers.html it also mentions the Sales Of Goods Act 1979, you could too, you could also mention to the store you purchased the tv from that their product didn't last too long and fails the Durability test, as such you would like it repaired\replaced as appropriate.
Or, you could save yourself some stress and just buy a new microwave.

As it's not going to be too economical to repair or even pursue in court. I wouldn't really waste the courts time over something that costs this little. Sorry if that offends, but in all honesty you would be quicker and best advised to just purchase another if it has to go to court. But at least try the retailer, you never know they may give a favourable response or who knows, the person you speak too may have seen the Daily Mail and be totally ignorant of the rest
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
you would probably have to pay the engineer for a report too.
i would just go and buy another one, you can get some for less than £30 these days.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
