cheap car for city driving 2000 miles a year

I`ve just sold my ´51 plate Nissan Almera 1.8, in one year it cost me £350 in maintenance, £287 insurance, £350 in fuel, depreciated £200 and £175 in car tax.
I only drove it 2000 miles!!!! So for £1362  I could have almost gone around by taxi! I cycle to work, so its only needed for Tescos and socially.
I´m thinking a 4 year old Citroen C1 might be a better bet, with the £500 depreciation offset by the soon to be £20 car tax, and presumably cheaper insurance. Is it just a fact of life that you can't really run a car for less than £1000 + fuel per year?

why would a citroen c1 be any different? just because of a few quid on tax?

i think your fooling yourself here.

as you said you dont really do many miles to warrant a car, why not as you say use taxis and hire a car if you go anywhere further than tesco?

Our Aygo costs less than £1000 a year to run. Service £100, insurance £200, fuel for 4,000 miles about £400, tax £35.

Don't really have that problem down here - it was rescheduled the other week, but generally it doesn't get moved about much... poor little Scotsman... :o

Well a smaller engine would definitely cut the costs. How about getting a 1.0 or something? Would most likely be cheaper to insure, tax and run.

c1 is a seriously cheap car to run. however, if your only needs are social and supermarket runs, why not get your shopping delivered by your supermarket, and use taxis for the social life?
    Mortgage £242500 on completion
    FD CC 11/2014 £5900 (£3900 after BT)
    FD loan Approx £5700

    Deeply depressing total - £254100
