Use old banana's to ripen tomatoes

An old tip given to me by an Uncle, you can ripen tomatoes naturally with a banana. Tomatoes naturally let off ethylene gas and because bananas let off ethylene gas as they ripen as well, you can put tomatoes with bananas to make the tomatoes ripen faster. I just hang a couple in the greenhouse.

I did know about this but previously I used to wrap them in a soft cloth and put them in a towel drawer. The banana method is much better. Did you notice that banana bunch hangers were being sold in shops these days but a separate bowl is good enough I think. The gas they give off also ripens other fruits if you put them together.0

Hopefully we're a couple of months away from the need to artifically ripen tomatoes, but if I have to pick mine green at the end of September I just lay them out on trays covered with newspaper indoors. I keep the riper ones together and find that this soon encourages the others.0

I picked my first tomato today, it was lovely. Got 2 aubergenes almost ready to be picked.0
