Nationwide won't replace my credit card!!

I am about to go travelling in September and I noticed that my Nationwide credit card is due to expire in November 2009, so I phoned up the helpline and explained this to them and asked could they replace my exisiting card with one that will extend it. The lad I spoke to said that Nationwide can't do this and basically I will have to wait until one is sent to my home address in November. As I mentioned to him I won't be in the country and I am not staying in one specific area. I am really annoyed as I need my credit card and basically I am being told hard luck by Nationwide.

What frustrates me further is that my debit card is about to expire yet they can replace it and send me a new one no problem.

What am I meant to do? Why are Nationwide being like this? I am thinking of applying for a Post Office credit card and hope they don't reject me.

  • I have had bad experiences of the call centre, which was relocated to Coventry a few years back.

What is absurd is that they would not hesitate to replace (and therefore extend) your card if it were lost, stolen or damaged. However, this is not a route I would advocate, simply because it is dishonest.

Use the geographical telephone number on your card to avoid a potentially expensive call and insist on speaking to a manager, if necessary making a complaint. If that fails do go down the Post Office card route.

Cut it in 2, it's damaged then. Not even dishonest.

Er... last time I reported my gold visa card damaged (it really was) to Nationwide, they sent me a replacement which had the same expiry as the original.....

Perhaps different with a lost card where they'll probably change the number.

I asked what would happen if I reported the card lost or stolen and he basically said they would send a new card out but would have the same expiry as the credit card I have now.

I've applied for the post office card now, should be with me in 6 working days.

Bit late now... but I would go for Santander over Post Office for foreign usage. Reasons:

    1) Better credit limit - Abbey (as was) gave me 10K just after Post Office have me 4K.
    2) Online system much better.

Of course other factors are relevant .. BT deals etc.
