Hi, hoping someone can advise me as very new to benefits set-up.
I resigned from my job recently and, as such, am aware that I am likely to face 26 weeks without unemployment benefit. However, do I sign on now so that the 26 week clock starts ticking? Position is that I gave 5 weeks notice in hopes that I could provide a complete handover (I had one weeks holiday booked within that time anyway hence thought I would be nice and give 5 weeks), however company decided that I should use up my remaining holidays and just finish 2 days later. thus I am technically on the payroll until July 31st but not actually in office at present.
Also if I sign up with a couple of agencies and perhaps manage to get temping work of, say, 2-3 weeks, does this in any way influence the 26 weeks? I am presuming the 26 weeks would simply continue to run from August 1st as I would have taken the temp job knowing that it was just that. What I need to ascertain is that it would not count against me to have taken the temp job.
Have not needed to sign on within the last 15 years and was only unemployed for a week or two then so feel totally lost right now. I know it was a very dodgy thing to do to resign but was feeling so down at last job that I kept making mistakes and was afraid I may end up being disciplined or even sacked if I continued. Likewise I wanted to avoid being signed off with stress as I feel there is still a lot of prejudice against this in the working environment, and having to declare it may have counted against me.

Go and sign on now - the jobcentre will be able to give you advice on when you could likely expect to receive JSA.0

Make your claim for jsa and then you will need to complete LV forms. They will then be sent to a decision maker and they will decide based on the information you provide if a sanction is appropriate. they may also write to your previous employer. You will be paid JSA provided you are entitled in the mean time once a decision is made it can be between nothing and 26 weeks. Nothing else you do to look for work in the mean time will help but anything you did before you handed in your notice may be taken into account. You have to prove you had good cause or did everything else you could before resorting to handing in your notice. Good luck with your jobsearch but make the claim sooner rather than later.0

From my understanding it is up to 26 weeks and rarely so.
I think this is more aimed at long term unemployed that are then forced into getting a job but walk out a week later and try and claim jsa again, that sort of thing0 -

Doubt if I could prove I did everything else possible as I did not really kick up a fuss at the time. Much of the errors were mine and to complain too badly just seemed like I was making excuses. Nor can I claim great hardship as I have a husband in FT employment, although the bills are going to be hard to meet with no income from me.
Will get in touch with them tomorrow to set the ball rolling.
Is JSA a set amount per week or does it vary with your circumstances? Also will it be influenced by the fact that I only worked 22.5 hours per week in my last job, rather than FT?

i believe its a set amount each week or every 2 weeks, not sure how or if its affected how many hours you worked in your last job0 -
I would get on the sign-on wagon ASAP!! because when i was made redundant and I started my new claim, there was a 5 week delay on recieving my first sign on payment because in their words "we have a huge amount of people now signing on due to the rise in unemployment and a limited number of staff available to handle/ put all data onto the systems to get your payments started, therefore your money will be backdated each time you sign on and you will recieve it in bulk in aorund 5 to 6 weeks time". As you can imagine... i wasn't best pleased as I have bills to pay!!!!!!!!!

Went in to the office today to sign on, only to be told I had to phone a number first and they would ask me a zillion questions before arranging an interview back at the same office I was standing in in about 3 working days time! Telephone call is estimated to last 40-45 minutes! Why someone there couldn't go through the 45 minutes worth of questions with me face to face I do not know.
Went home and phoned, took me through first 10 minutes worth of questions then realised I was stilltechnically on the payroll until Friday so was told I could not do this until I was officially unemployed. As they do not open on Saturday, I will now have to wait until Monday to phone, thus bouncing the office appointment until late next week.

Just to update all, filled in all forms re why I had left stating that reduction in hours and incerase in work led to me becoming stressed and making mistakes (perfectly honest). Also pointed out that I had since been replaced by a full time person. These comments are then submitted to your former employer to let them see what you have said and they have the chance to respond. Presume they did not as I have only been penalised for first 3 days with full JSA kicking in from day 4.

You haven't been penalised for 3 days. The irst 3 days ofany claim are "waiting days" and JSA only kicks in from day 4. You will start to receive benefit as normal - the decision from the decision maker can take up to 6 weeks (possibly longer) but you will receive benefit in the meantime. The sanction (if there is one) will kick in after that decision is made.
As for the staff in the jobcentre not asking you the questions - they don't have access to the computer system that is used to record the answers to the questions. Everybody has their own job to do and their part to play. If you went into a clothes store and they didnt have your size you wouldn't expect the sales assistant to make a new garment in your size would you?0
