    I've been Money Tipped!
Was the deal for your new car conditional on the trade in or is the salesman happy for you to get rid yourself? It would be worth just checking - just in case he was relying on a bit of profit to offset against any deal he gave on the new car.

Also, have a look at Autotrader (the proper magazine, not the website) - they have a whole list of tips for selling which include how to handle payments, test drives etc. Looking at the mag will also give you a feel for the market in your price range.

i think you should get 3-3.5k for your car - lots of traders are selling similar spec 2002 versions for 4k so the fact that your's is 2003 should help you. I think it's more difficult to shift the 2.7 version due to the high tax, insurance and low MPG - so you'd need to price attractively to get people through the door. As suggested above, autotrader may be the way to go.

    Pistonheads and Autotrader.
Just write a basic advert listing what it is and what condition it's in.
    eg:
    Hyundai Coupe 2.7 V6 2003 63K
    Service history
    Recent new clutch
    Scratch on the back
Central locking fob does not work
    Happy chappy
  • Hi all,

thank you for your advice, we have already had an offer for the car via pistonheads!

    Next question.....
    How do you organise payment?

Cheque - would need to keep the car till it cleared?
Cash - counterfeit?? Large sums to carry to bank!
Bank transfer - seems like best bet!

    What do you all think?

    Thanks :D

Bank transfer would be the best bet. But would the buyer agree to parting with their money before they got the car??
You could go for cash and meet them in a car park near a bank, then just say you are going to pay the money into the bank before handing over the keys. If he has nothing to hide with the cash then they wont have a problem with this.

This is exactly what I am worried about too... I've only ever bought or part exchanged from a dealer....

Does anyone know how to complete the transfer section of the DVLA car registration doc?

    cheers

Local yellow free advert newspaper. Postcards in local offlicences or newspaper shops. Autotrader. Sign printed on window of car advertising for sale.

ALSO when you sell the car, make sure you give a receipt out stating "Sold to Mr (or Mrs) xyz car registration number xxxxxx today the (date) and sold at (time). Said car is sold talequale.

Then make two copies. You sign one and the other person signs the other. Then you keep the one the other person signed and he gets the other. (Just tell him/her as proof of sale until he/she gets the new logbook).

Notes: date (should be as per logbook which you then have to send to DVLA. Time = in case the person does a speeding session on the M1 or M6 and gets loads of tickets. That way any speeding ticket, parking ticket, or whatever AFTER the time sold you are not liable for. Talequale means "as seen" and means that there is no guarantee with the car.

If you describe the car, ensure the description is accurate. Never put in things like "Excellent Condition" or other subjective comments. Stick to facts. The reason is that under civil law you could be sued for any misdescription by the purchaser, even as a private seller.

Do NOT put anything such as "sold as seen" as it is meaningless in law. It has been held that all that phrase means is that the one you sold is the one the purchaser saw. You cannot exclude all your obligations, as stated above. If a trader puts "sold as seen" on an invoice he committs an offence, regardless of any other matters.

Also, bear in mind that it is an offence to sell an unroadworthy car, except in certain instances, such as if it is (genuinely) sold as scrap and trailered away.
