Hi all,

I currently use a crystal rock deodorant which is basically a lump of ammonium alum. I'm told it's possible to buy ammonium alum from grocers shops (my cunning plan is to shave off bits of alum, put in a spray bottle, add water and then use as a refillable deodorant spray). Does anyone know where I can buy it as I've had no luck looking on the net? I just need either a 1 - 2kg lump or some ground up crystals/powder.

Thanks.

Tescos and Sainsburys and some other places sell aluminium free deoderant, a company called Bionses make it- its in a blue roll on or pump spray or aerosol.

Also, another variety called Rok do aluminium free deoderants- its a rock in a tube that you rub on, costs about £5.99 a tube, lasts a long long time. Also sold in supermarkets.

Neals Yard sell the rock your after. Not sure of the price, I got mine for about £5 but it was about 10 years ago!

I assume you are talking about Pit Rok.
This product is made from Aluminium ammonium sulphate (Ammonium Alum) - just what the OP is talking about. I think he/she was just looking to buy the ingredient and make it themself! That's MSE for you!

    Thats the one!!

Make it themselves!! Wow- thats gotta take some doing! Am sure you can also buy the rocks at Chinese medical health shops- used to use it when I was at Uni and using natural dyes for fabrics (it works as a mordant- to help the colour develop and stick around). Never knew it could be made by a person- thought it was a natural occurrence with rocks and things- shows how unaware I am!!

I've used Green Peoples Deo-crystal spray for a few years now, but they've recently discontinued it, so I make my own like the OP says - bash up a 'rock' and do a 50/50 mix in a spray bottle, topping the rock up as it disolves. The rock costs about the same as one of the pre-bashed bottles used to, but fills the bottle 4 times, so already cheaper - don't know why I didn't think of it years ago, lol.

If buying the rock 'un-processed' will work out even cheaper then that's even better - will keep my eyes open and post if I find any.

    :)

Thanks for all the replies and yes, I am looking to buy a lump of the stuff, hit it with a hammer and make the deodorant myself. I like to think I bring a whole new meaning to the word "cheapskate".

Just to be an extra needy person - I live abroad and only come back to the UK briefly once or twice a year. Does anyone know of a Chinese medicine place in south-west London or near Victoria station? I will only be there for half a day so haven't got ime to hunt around. Thanks!

It's very therapeutic bashing it to pieces - I put mine in a bag/wrap in a teatowel and take the rolling pin to it, lol.

Just do it on a hard surface and don't get your head too close - it's surprisingly hard and the rebound can be more than you realise.

Where do you get it from (the rock, not the rolling pin)?
