I've noticed in the past couple of weeks a few threads on the ebay forums like THIS and THIS. Ive seen at least on 3 or 4 occasions people sending items before getting payment! I am so confused at why people would do this?

The first one is the oh so common paypal scam but I honestly didn't think anyone fell for that anymore. Basically seller gets a dodgy looking email that purports to be from paypal saying item must be shipped and the tracking details given over ebfore paypal release the funds. How on earth the seller thinks it is genuine when there is nothing showing in their paypal aco!!!! I have no idea. That first one doesn't appear to have even been sold via ebay anyway, so the whole thing must have been an off ebay scam from the start.

The second one just looks like a naive seller who values getting things sorted quickly over keeping things safe.

There is no way ta all that you can help people who do not take even the most basic precautions.

From the first item, the seller wrote:
Hi, I sold an Ipod Nano ... I'm new to this ...I sent the item before payment ... and yes i sent it to nigeria,

A reply from another (that wasn't answered):
Just looked at the item. It didn't receive any bids. Was it "sold" through eBay?

Was this thread just a wind up?
I can't believe even those TSFE would be this dumb

Having read on here some of the things people do/fall for/make up I can certainly believe it.

Wether the thread was a wind up or not . Who Knows? I do believe this happens though and happens a lot more than we think. New ebay sellers just seem to leap into selling without understanding. The processes and systems and the besy way to protect themselves (some of them are just Muppets though)

Throw the greed element in and new ebayers fall victim quite easily.

Yes I believe it happens and whilst do not approve of a nanny state I do think that maybe ebay and paypal need to really consider some sort of programme where you have to have some history before you sell high end items willy nilly. The fact that someone can sign up, buy a couple of books or other cheap items and then list a mobile or Ipod or something expecting to be completely aware of how it works strikes me as very odd.

No doubt though if ebay did start a rule where you had selling limits for the first month or so or until you had made X amount of purchases we would be inundated with threads whinging about how unfair ebay is that Fred can't sell his £300 stereo on the same day he opens an account..and he will sue ebay for discrimination (insert usual rants here).
