    hi
have you spoken to trading standards?? I'm not sure what I would do to be honest--if it was just a mess and a split can I'd probably just get the refund, but could it have really hurt someone? If there is a problem with the cans then I think it should get fixed--maybe a boy with an arthritic pet dog really could be hurt.

The point you need to make is that the can on this occasion was not fit for purpose, the manacturer can test the batch etc if they know that there is a problem. Manufacturing units must act with the utmost rigor to guarantee the integrity of the finished product and I don't think Asda are doing anyone a favour with their dismissive response. Elf and safety etc...

I used to put cans in the ice box of my fridge 20 years ago .... supposed to only be for 30 minutes but I'd forget. Next time I opened the fridge/ice box I'd find the can had exploded and there was a frozen lump of brown goo and frozen bits wherever the spray had hit.

When I was young, it was a real feat to crush a can. Couldn't do it at all. No chance. It took bigger boys/men to be able to crush one.... now I can do it with one finger and my thumb.

Be very careful how you proceed with this, you don't say how long the cans were in the car for before your daughter picked the can up, and as the temperature goes up in the car, it goes up in the can and the pressure inside the can increases.

Even a small fault in the can, combined with the temperature and pressure could have caused the can to split when picked up - ever dropped a can of furniture polish or even a can of pop? you get some interesting results sometimes. And looking at the side of a can of fly spray (it's all I can reach at the moment) it say do not expose to temperatures in excess of 50 deg Celcius.

The pressures inside an aerosol can and a can of fizzy drink are not comparable. There's no warning on the side of a can of coke (afaik) because the pressure is a lot lower.

Fair point Volcano there isn't a warning on the side of a can of pop, however the same principles apply - pressurised container heated and the pressure increases - a minor flaw in the can, as daughter picks it up and squeezes the can (ever so slightly), and the pressure inside the can increases again, the flaw fails and the can goes bang.

This happen to a friend of mine with a can of Asda cola. It exploded in her bag and ruined the contents.

She wrote a letter to Asda complaining (she does this quite often to various companies, not for compo or anything just to make them aware of faulty products and I personally think it's her hobby:rotfl:) and they sent her a small token of goodwill.

  • I think you should write to Asda head office and make them aware that they need to take action.

It might not just be your one can, it could be a whole batch and someone could be hurt next time.

They dont appear to be too bothered & sent us a standard reply saying take it back to the store for a refund or send it to them & they will send refund on gift card!

I'm fuming but not sure what to do next,,, Any advice much appreciated:o

What do you think would be a reasonable outcome to this? What would you consider an acceptable way for Asda to handle this?
