It's probably pretty easy to use but in order to do it you have to go through the manual process of getting a UTR.

Unless you are already in SA and you have a UTR you have to do a load of chasing around to get this anyway.

Depends on the circumstances but if you can explain why you think you are due a refund, eg emergency tax etc it's easier to do a letter. If you phone they will also tell you what to do. When you send the stuff off they'll do all the calcs for you too.

Ah well now I see your point. I had no idea it was difficult to get a UTR, I thought everybody had one automatically like an NI number.

Well I think that is a shame. I got refunds of £1,100 last year and £1,800 this year paid into my bank account within two weeks of doing the form on line, whereas other people are chasing around for months on end (my husband for two years ). My refund this year was due to being on an emergency tax code.

Can I ask why you complete a tax return? Normally if you don't fulfill certain criteria they remove you from Self Assessment (SA)

I complete a tax return because they write to me and tell me I must, I assume it is because I meet the criteria.

However, even if they told me that I didn't need to but I had tax to reclaim, I would do one voluntarily.
  • I'm waiting for a refund too. Sent off the relevant documents at the beginning of May and now I'm getting rather frustrated. When I first phoned up they told me it would take 4-6 weeks and I'm still waiting...! I phoned them on Monday and got a little more angry at them as it really frustrated me that it's fine for the government to take 3 months to open post, but if I was a business and didn't pay my tax bill for 3 months because I hadn't gotten round to opening the post, they wouldn't be happy. I put this to the advisor I spoke to and he said he'd sent an email to their customer services to chase up my claim. My main worry is that they've lost my P60s that I sent as if this is the case it will take me a while to get copies. It's very frustrating when you know you're going to get the money but don't know when!

I wouldn't be surprised if they have lost your P60s. Here's my story so far.....

First sent a letter in April
They wrote to me in June asking for documents sent them and since then nothing.

I am so fed up with them so I called them again chasing. The man on the phone said on my file it says that they require information about benefits claimed between 2006 and 2008. I told him that I sent all the original documents/information too them well over 6 weeks ago along with employment documents payslips and p45s. He said it says on your file, we have received your employment details but we still need the information about your benefits. I said but I sent all that together so it should all be there. He said you'd be better sending them again, I explained that I sent originals and have no copies. He suggested I get in touch with the benefits agency and ask them for details, get them to send it to me and then send on to them. I have given them every single piece of information about my benefits and when I called the benefits people they are sending me the same information that I have already sent in so there is nothing more to give or tell them

So they have got the employment documents and information but not the benefit ones which I sent in the same envelope? I can only presume that they have been lost which is not my problem.

Another point, why was I never asked for these documents/information again? Why should I have to phone them every week to ask what they need? Shouldn't they have contacted me? Or are they hoping I just forget about it and they will never have to pay me back?

New system or old system why should we be made to wait and wait and wait for our money? If the boot was on the other foot and I owed them £700 I am sure they would not accept any excuses from me.

I have realised this cheque is not going to be coming in the near future so now I am telling myself it will come in December as a Christmas treat.

I do kinda have sympathy for the call handlers, they should not have to put up with people shouting and being horrible but it seems that these days if you don't kick up a fuss you won't get nothing.

When I send my benefit information in again I will be writing a few stern words on the letter, won't make any difference but it will make me feel a bit better.

My advice is to get the copies now so you have them to send in. Chances are they will come back to you in a months time asking for them saying they don't have them.

I've been battling with them since April, it's now August. It's just a shambles.
  • Hi Guys,

Just thought i'd give my input on the situation at present for me:

I'm currently waiting on tax rebates, from Bury Tax Office.
I mailed in my claim forms etc along with original P60's and a covering letter explaining my circumstances. I basically left employment in oct 2007, and returned in may 2008 causing the lapse in tax. This was all detailed to them in my covering letter as I am claiming overpaid tax for the fiscal years 2007 and 2008.

All information mailed April 5th 2009. Heard nothing back from them for two weeks when I received a letter through the post asking for information to explain the gap in my employment. So i called them up and re-sent the original letter in response (I had put in the original letter that I had no employment between the dates they queried).

During the telephone conversation, I asked the person if they had a copy of my letter that I sent in, he replied yes, to which I asked if they'd read it correctly. After prompting him to re-read it on their systems, he agreed whoever actioned the mail was not paying attention and would place a flag on my account to have it actioned within the next two weeks. Two weeks passed and nothing, so I contacted them, to which I was told to wait another two weeks whilst they process it.

Again another 4 weeks passed taking us into June. I called again, and was told to be patient as it was being dealt with currently, payment should be sent within two weeks so to call back then.

Again another 2 weeks, still nothing. I contacted them and was now informed that they were currently upgrading their computer systems and no payments were being issued until the end of june, I was advised to call back first week in july. So I did, and was told their systems were still being upgraded and to call back in a week.

Another week passed, I contacted them and yet again was told that the systems were still being upgraded and they couldn't help me. I was told to have patience and call back at the end of july as payment will have been processed by then.

As it stands now, I contacted them for the 7/8/9th time last week. And guess what.....their systems are STILL being upgraded and no payments are now being issued until mid-august. I have been told to wait until the end of august and call them back. I expressed concern that I am constantly being "fobbed off", and what guarantee do I have that when I call back at the end of August their systems will have been completely upgraded, because I fear this repetetiveness will go on until the end of the year. The agent then got really arrogant, and told me to stop complaining and just accept the fact that the tax office will deal with my request when they see fit.

This is a nightmare, and I'm getting passed from pillar to post. Anybody else had the same experience with Bury Tax office?

  • I'm in a similar situation, although I applied for a refund for 2007-2008 back in January. I've been told that a cheque was issued in March but "must have got lost in the post"; I've been trying to have it reissued since early June and although I'm regularly told that it's been authorised pending reissue and most people I speak to are apologetic and/or helpful, I'm still waiting some seven months after my initial application. I spoke to someone incredibly unhelpful today who told me that I "clearly failed to understand (their) procedures" and arrogantly informed me that there was no timeframe within which they needed to make payment.

I'm now living on fresh air and tearing my hair out. Can anyone help me to resolve this?

I wonder what would happen if we told them we would pay our taxes when we felt like it.
