My resucue dog is peeing

Hi

I'm after some advice, I have just picked up my 1 year old staffie. she is brilliant, the only problem is she is suppose to be house trained yet. she keeps peeing in the kitchen.

I have walked her 6 times today and almost 8 miles.

I was told at the home to keep putting her in the kitchen for 15 mins every house so she know we will come back but we normally come back to find 1/2 presents.

She barked so I took her outside, she then ran in the kitchen and weed on the floor.

has anyone got any advice.

  • Hey
Well done on getting a rescue Staffy there are so many of them.

If she was in kennels, being house trained can soon go out of the window.
Try taking her outside every hour or so and wait with her. Give her no option of going inside until you want to and when she does finally go toilet outside give her loads and loads of praise.

As you've only just got her she will be very nervous and will take time to settle. I rescued a Staffie in January and he took a couple of months to completely settle. He also had a problem with peeing in the house, except when he did so he had to hide it so he'd drag a tea towel or something off the side. He doesn't do it very often now only really when he won't go outside if its raining.

    Good luck with it

You might have to put up with it for a couple of weeks till she's settled down, try not to get annoyed with her.

Please please do not walk her in the day in this heat, Staffs can't control their temp & even other breeds are dying, we enjoy the heat (Or some humans do, not me lol) but Dogs can & do die very quickly (Sorry, I know you didn't ask that but it shocks me that people will risk their Dogs lives)

It's too much walking on day 1 for a young Dog too.

You say you normally come back to find 1-2 presents, but also this is day 1? (Confused?) Rescue Dogs need at least a month to settle in, so it may just be her being unsettled, have you got a DAP diffuser set up? Don't start responding to barks, they normally show other signs when needing to go (Like circling/going to the door/pawing the ground) if she learns she only has to bark & out she goes she may well remember that whenever she feels like nipping out! lol

How do you mean in the kitchen for 15 minutes every house? Sorry it's abit confusing, if you give more info I & others might be more able to suggest things (I have a Rescue Staffy)

They can get seperation anxiety & so when you leave to go out without her you need to nopt say bye or fuss her & when you return you come in & ignore her until she's calm so she doesn't see you coming & going as a big deal, also to start by leaving for a few minutes & only coming back when she's quiet.

If this is day 1 i'd suggest letting her settle, no 8 miles of walking especially in hot weather, go early morning & late night if it's hot, they sweat thru their pawpads & hot pavements aren't good!

Let us know when she does it what happens before & after, never ever punish her opr even say anything, just quietly clean it up & use bio washing powder & we can all help when we know more x

Do you think that you may be trying too hard? walked 6 times in one day?
Poor little girlie, all she wanted was a lap to lie across and a hand to comfort her.

Chill. Stroke her across your knee whilst sitting on the floor.
The piddlies may now have to be gently retaught as in a puppy. Sorry not her fault but just that you were over anxious and wanted to succeed too fast. Just relax, a little loo-lee can be cleared up, say nothing to her, give her loads of cuddles and enjoy one another. Aaaaagghh !

Just read the OP again. To be frank, if someone took me out of prison to a place unknown, I'd be wetting myself from fear. I'd be able to control it once I knew this person wasn't going to shout at me like the last ones did, or worse give me a sly thump before locking me away so an unknown could collect me. Poor little girl, but she'll be alright, ignore her a bit. let her find her way.
  • thanks all for the replies,

well first night is over and already see her getting better. She creid a bit last night when we out her in bed but settled down and we had nothing until about 6:30am.

Yeah maybe trying a little to hard with her, taking her out alot as thought she has had little freedom up to now.we have started taking her outside every hour and waiting untill she does something.

I think your all right will just take a little bit of time, she is like a shadow at the moment cant go anywhere without her and she cries if left for a second, But hoping when she realises were coming back this will calm down.
I have two cats upstairs who are not coming down, althought the staffy seems alot more scared of them.

    thanks again for everyones responces.

If anyone has any advice for trying to get cats and dogs aloing that would be great.
  • do not worry about the cats and dogs yet - let the dog get used to the house and you first - she does not know whether she is staying there for an hour, a day or a week, or who you are, or what you are doing with her!!

I would not walk her too much, both becuase of the heat but also because it will all be a bit much, too much stimulation and new experiences at once... let her settle without too much fuss, and dont have a million visitors coming round to look at her.

Ask guests, when they do come, to ignore her totally tll they have got in and gt settled, then to call her over for a fuss if they like, but not too much. She needs to bond with you, and become calm and relaxed. You also need to keep popping her out frequently, and when she pees or poos outside, give her a little tasty treat (a sliver of ham or cheese is good) and some quiet gentle praise.

When she wees inside do not scold her, but just cean up with some biological washing powder/liquid and water - it removes the smell so she wont be triggered to go there again because it smells like the right place to go!

Good luck, let her relax, and do not be on her case all the time - most dogs like to sleep for a good proportion if the day, so make sure she has a comfy bed in a quiet corner - she will be tired!

    Good luck!

Hi I know how you feel. We took in a Staff about a year ago just a bit older and she was all over the place at first. But now she is perfectly behaved in most ways and we have learnt to read her and she has learnt how to read us and take advantage of us!!
