Stories at bedtime

Does anyone else remember "My Naughty Little Sister stories", by Dorothy Edwards? They were fab and still are, children aren't bothered by the out of date details. I also have very fond memories of "Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf". Both these titles are actually the first in a series, and each consists of a series of interlinked short stories about the same characters.
I would agree wholeheartedly with the posters above who said don't be in too much of a hurry to get on to "older" books, and also those who said don't forget picture books. My class last year - year 4 so aged 8-9 years - really loved being read to from picture books; they don't have to be dead simple to be picture books. Also don't forget to TELL your children stories, maybe about their own everyday lives or maybe invented adventures, as this is a vital part of learning to tell stories themselves, to write and to communicate effectively in the future.0
