What type of paypal account should I use? ? ?

I signed up with Ebay today and wanted a Paypal account for secure payments. Theres premeir, business and personal which one shall I use?

Does business account charge more money or something? I would only use Ebay to buy and sell things once in a blue moon.

  • If you are only going to use eBay and PayPal ocassionally then I would think that a personal account would suffice.

The main difference between a Personal and Premier PayPal account is that with a Personal account you will be unable to accept payments by credit or debit card and therefore will not be able to display the PayPal logo on your auctions saying that you accept PayPal. However, if you chose the premier account you have the advantage of being able to accept card payments but you will also be charged for any payment you receive whether they paid by card or funds already in their PayPal account.

For someone using eBay and PayPal ocassionally I would start with a personal account to begin with, you can always upgrade when/if you feel the need to.

  • Yes, you can add a bank account or credit card to your account.

    No, there is no charge.

No, and it's not normally necessary to put any money in your Paypal account, you can just use it to pay from your bank account or credit card when required. There is a 25p charge for withdrawals of less than £50, but it's free to withdraw £50 or more to your bank account.

If you are going to sell then you will have to upgrade to a premier account if you are going to accept paypal. A basic account only allows the seller to receive payments via an existing paypal balance a premier acocunt allows the seller to accept all paypal monies however funded. If you tick the 'I accept paypal' box then you must accept all forms of payment.

The bad news is that as a seller a premier account means you will charged for every payment you receive. It makes no difference to you as a buyer.

But the charge isnt much, only 3.5% (i think so!). Basically, if i sell a phone for £100, paypal will take £3.50 and if i send money to another account then there isnt a charge.

Can i send money to various bank accounts? i used one to sign up but if i wanted t pay say for example my brother £20, can i send it to his bank account via paypal without charges? that would be kinda cool if it worked!

Finally, if i sold something on ebay e.g. a mobile phone, and i received the money and the buyer complains saying he/she didnt receive the goods when i did send it. Would the receipt be good enough of proof to ebay and paypal to show that i have actually sent the goods? ??

Ebay is quite dodgy, and im very scared that i could become a victim of some sort of con. I dont know all the scams that well, hence, the reason why im on MSE and getting advice form all you lovely people.
  • You can't send money directly to bank accounts. You can only send money for example to your brother's email address. This money would then credit his PayPal account. If he wanted to take the money out of his PayPal account he would then have to withdraw funds to a bank account. You wouldn't incur any charges by sending him money although he would if he had a Premier or Business PayPal account.

Uhm if you had say £100 in your PayPal account from various eBay auctions and decided that you wanted to put this money into your actual bank account you would have to ensure that your bank account was on file with Paypal and then choose the option to withdraw funds to your bank account.

I don't believe that you could add your brothers bank account to your PayPal account and withdraw money that way because your names wouldn't match. You would have to send him the money and then he would have to withdraw it himself.

    I hope I haven't totally confused you.

    Thanks.
