if you open up a post office account or co-op one before bankruptcy, does it get frozen like current accounts do as obviously the it would have to be written on the petition?
also what happens with things that have to be paid by direct debit like rent etc?
one more question-is there anyother way that sorts out debt without losing bank account? thankyou.

Perhaps.
ORs have little or no interest in basic accounts as there is no debt attached to them. If the OR has no interest then its up to the bank themselves whether or not to keep the account open. Co-Op is BR friendly and almost always allows the account to be kept open. Whereas the Halifax wouldn't allow it to be kept open even if you were roasting them on a open fire.
Is the Post Office account one of those where you can only have your benefit paid into it and can only withdraw cash?? If so, then that is not likely to be closed.0 -
i havent actually got a post office account but i thought id heard before that a post office basic account was ok like the co-op.
unfortunately i bank with the dreaded halifax  lol
my husband went BR in april and looks like i may have to as well.0 -
Oh dear. Halifax? Don't go into a branch after BR day - they'll brand you with UNCLEAN on your forehead and chase you down the high street with pitchforks and alight torches.
The Post Office account isn't that useful as you can only withdraw cash and only have benefits paid into it. The Co-Op is the best account really; its a normal bank account but without the cheque book or overdraft. Still get the online banking too.0 -
skylight that made me laugh:rotfl:
to make matters worse my ex husband works there lmao
does the co-op allow direct debits and standing orders?so i could open one and have my benefits changed to go into my new account so that nothing is going into my halifax account at the time of bankruptcy?
thankyou for your help.0 -
Yep - Co-Op allows all DD and SOs plus payments in. It is just like a normal account without the potential debt hassle.
The only downside with them, is that their online banking doesn't list pending transactions so they only deduct the monies after it has gone through the banking system. But its something you get used to (unless Halifax already do it so you are used to it!).0 -
yeah im used to that with the halifax, the only problem is that theres no co-op near me whatsoever.can everything be done online?0

co op and post office are fine0

The Haifax are fine ones to brand BR's unclean. Is this not the bank that was almost BR and was bailed out by the tax payer? The bloke on the adverts used to live up the road from me, judging by their recent efforts he's probably BR himself;) We give you xtra hassle.Better to be poor than a slave to wealth

Coop one you can phone and set up easily. Phone number is on their website. Make sure you tell them clearly it is the Cashminder account you want and not a full current account.0

and one thing to remember as well.....if the co-op say your account application is being "referred" its nothing to worry about....We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0
