Travel Insurance -

Hi,

I am travelling to Portugal next week - have booked flights with low frills airline and will be staying in a villa that has been booked privately. Also hired a car, again booked direct.

A few years ago I had travel insurance with insure and go - but when it looked like I would be stranded in The Gambia and called them to see if I was covered to change flight, they just kept telling me to contact my rep in resort. I told them that I didn't have a rep as I was travelling around the country and booked everything independently and so it turned out that I wasn't actually covered (didn't need to make a claim so relieved really but annoyed that I had paid for something that was in fact invalid)

So, which travel insurance can you recommend that will cover me for independant travel. Only going for 1 week

Thanks

There was a thread about this recently though your circumstances are a bit different.

I wouldn't have looked to travel insurance to sort out a new flight anyway though - that's the airline's responsibility isn't it?

In any event, we only go DIY, we always get 'normal' travel insurance and consider ourselves covered.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply, however the circumstances i which I found myself almost stranded meant that a new flight would have been covered by insurance, though yes I would have arranged a new flight through the airline! Luckily, I wasn't and didn't need the new flight, however I was not covered under my travel insurance should I have required that new flight - since then, I have usually booked backpacker insurance, which does cover you for travelling around a country (which is what I tend to do) but this time, I'm going with my toddler and his grandparents and we wont be travelling around, however I dont think you can get backpacker insurance for a weeks holiday, and want to be sure that normal travel insurance does cover you when you have booked things independently
  • If any person reading this wanted to know - I got insurance through AXA were you can add independent traveller - it was under £50 for myself and son for the year
